What's biz casual in corporate law for men? Blazer? Button down? Dress shoes?

Slacks, button-down, dressier-type shoes.

Are dress shoes ok? I really only have "date" type shoes, and cole haan boat shoes that are classy but not seasonal.

Dress shoes are fine. I add a blazer to the list as well.

Dress shoes are fine and dandy, just not absolutely required.

Are chinos, a white button down and sport coat acceptable? And can the sport coat be more liberal if it matches like hunter green or beige?

I've seen people wearing them at some of the business casual places I went to.

Real pants always.

This seems to vary by firm/city. I wouldn't make a big investment in chinos until you start. You might realize that biz cas can mean "leave your suit jacket on your chair."

Granted it was summer in DC, but I saw not one tie during all of my callbacks. All slacks/button-downs. Everyone had a suit hanging on the back of their office door.

Just work at a firm that has a business formal dress code. Problem: solved.

Or a casual dress code, for that matter.

My firm is business formal, which sucks from the perspective of having to ride the subway every single day while sweating my ass off in a suit, but good from the perspective of the 8 year old in me who hates having to pick out clothes to wear. I get to make like Doug and have what amounts to a closetful of the same outfit, with ties in a mechanical rotation.

Enjoy your summer at Cravath, Swaine & Moore.

Huh? I was told by someone going there that Cravath was the only firm in New York that still has a business formal dress code. Mind sharing which one it is, since you're anonymous and all?

Edited for punctuation-fail and specificity.

Alright fine, nothing here to connect the dots anyway. Jones Day. Recently went back to business formal, after doing a few years of business casual, and not liking the vibe I guess, or maybe people took too much advantage of it (at least in my office, not sure about others).

suits without ties (and don't have to wear the suit jacket all the time).

And you should always keep a tie in your office (a backup suit even better).

Wear something nice on Day 1 (button down with a blazer and nice slacks) and see what people are wearing. Then from Day 2 on, try to mirror the other attorneys.

I work for a firm where half the office wears jeans. To each their own, but I don't see myself ever wearing jeans to the office, so I will probably be among the nicest dressed people there.

This. Call your recruiting contact if you are not sure what is appropriate for your office.
