Biglaw + Dog?
Is that combination even feasible? I can see cats working out fine. But with excessive time demands/random travel/unpredictability, can you actually work at a firm and be a good dog owner at the same time?

Re: Biglaw + Dog?
almost everybody at the firm where I am working has a dog. I am not working at biglaw but we work from 9-7pm or sometimes longer hours.
you can walk your dog late at night.
big dogs may be more demanding than small dogs, though.

Re: Biglaw + Dog?
It's called a dog walker, and if you're feeling really guilty you can pay for doggie daycare.
Working a demanding schedule and having a dog is feasible, but you need to be willing to make some financial sacrifices to make it fair for the dog.

Re: Biglaw + Dog?
So true. No dog likes being home alone/caged for 12 hours a day. When I worked this past summer I hired a dog walker for certain days, and they went to daycare other days. Ya its not cheap, but if the health (mental and physical) of your dog is a priority, then it is absolutely worth it.bdubs wrote:It's called a dog walker, and if you're feeling really guilty you can pay for doggie daycare.

Instead of paying a dog walker, I found one to marry. She makes dinner, walks the dog, and takes care of the home.
And she loves me, for now.
Winning.

Re: Biglaw + Dog?
The place I took my dogs in chicago when I lived there was about $30 per dog per day (granted the place was kick ass). Im going to go ahead and say a spouse is cheaper, especially when you factor in the cooking. haha.IAFG wrote:How much does she cost? If you have a gf/wife/husband/whatever who lives with you that helps a lot, if not sack up and pay for a dog walker.

Re: Biglaw + Dog?
I've been wanting a dog for ages. Undergrad was undergrad, wasn't ready. Working post-law school, money was tight enough and I liked being able to be an irresponsible wreck of a human being. Law school, I have moved too much, although the time at home studying would be ideal.
Unless you have a significant other, or stable and responsible roommates (probably gonna have to be decent friends you live with), I don't think a dog is a good decision for someone spending 10-12 hours away each day, just for work. What happens when you want to go to the gym or run when/where the dog can't? What happens when you want to go out on Friday and/or Saturday night? Gotta go into the office rather than work from home on the weekend?
Unless there is a stable person in the dog's life that is around enough, I think it's selfish to subject the dog to a stream of daycare/walkers for the minimal time you get with them.

Re: Biglaw + Dog?
Bigger dogs are objectively better as pets than small dogs. Get a golden retriever or a lab, and you're making a great life decision.
Getting married is objectively better than being single.
Get married and a big dog - then split the care of the pet or have enough money to pay for dog care.
Step 3 ?
Profit.

Lol, don't think this is an option for an associate at a biglaw firm.Anonymous User wrote:one of my professor has separated from his wife and he brings his golden retriever every monday/tuesday (given that he teaches 3 days a week it's like always) to office.

Adopt an older dog from the pound. Otherwise you are not doing the dog any favors.
