NYC Housing - Proof of Income and other things good to know

Hi TLS,
Thought I would tap into your collective wisdom about living in NYC and finding an apartment there. I'm looking to move to NY permanently within the next few months.
1) Does anyone ask their firm for a "proof of income" letter? I have noticed that many apartments (even sublets) require this.
2) Any other tips for finding housing in NYC? I've been looking mostly in Brooklyn and Westchester areas, and any advice you have (especially on how to avoid scammy hidden-fee landlords and such) would be much appreciated. I have looked mostly on craigslist. If possible, I'd love to avoid a broker fee.
Thanks!
