2 SA postions, but the one you really want makes a late post

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Feb 07, 2012 6:14 am

I'm a 2L and already accepted two SA postions through OCI- one at a big law firm in a market I don't care for (lived there before), and one at a mid law firm in a large market where I wouldn't hate living. Another mid law firm recently posted an opening for an SA position in my dream market. Their expertise is in a field where I had substantial prior work experience (6 years- executive level). I would rather do the work at that firm and in that market than either of my two other opportunities. I know it'd be really shitty of me to apply. I already committed to the other two firms and it would make my school's OCS look bad. Would it hurt to give them the heads up that I may be interested in talking about something after I graduate? The field is very niche and I would likely be able to get them some clients within a few years working there. Would it be shooting myself in the foot because I already have two jobs that may hear about my chatting up another firm? How should I approach it?

/ full disclosure- I used to work in the target market. My wife used to work in the target market, wants to move back (so do I), and she has a job waiting for her if she can make it back. If we move to either of the other two markets she'll have to find a new job. Also, we both have a lot of friends there.

I would talk to your school's OCS. Since you applied through OCI, there are rules about what you can do, etc.

But, if one of them is a firm you would hate working at and might not go to if you got an offer, then it sounds like another place might be best for both of you. However, they are going to want to know why you submitted a bid for a place you don't want to be.

Why were you even checking job postings if you already had a job? What you don't know can't hurt you, etc.

But I don't see how talking to a firm about a full time position post-law school would be a problem. Its essentially what happens in 3L OCI anyway.
