How to list on resume job you haven't started?

I have a government attorney job lined up for the fall, but am currently applying for some internships for the next few months. How do I (if at all) list my future position on my resume? "Prospective [position]"? "Future [position]"? Those sound really weird. Any ideas?

If it's a "big deal," just mention it in your cover letter. It doesn't belong on your resume.

Sure you do. Just also list that you intend to become bilingual in Mandarin and eventually become a partner at the law firm you're applying to.

They'll see it as unbridled ambition and hire you on the spot.

On other old threads people have said it is alright if you have been offered and have accepted the future job. For start date you just list your projected start date and for description you just write "will do xyz" only if you have been told and know for a fact you will be doing xyz.

:lol: You were onto this in the original post --just make a section header (in bold, of course) that says Future Jobs/Skills

Some uninformed posting going on in here. You think, for example, that people with post-graduation clerkships lined up don't put that on the resume if they decide to do 3L OCI for one reason or another? Or if they decide to apply for a post-clerkship clerkship, or any other post-clerkship jobs that have early application deadlines?

Clerkships are a 'special case' for this, but I also think that if the government job is relevant to the internships OP is applying to, it can show continuity of interest. That continuity is important to a lot of public interest hiring.

How you list this depends on your overall resume format. My resumes have:

[Name of Employer], [Employer location]
[Position], [Date started] - [Date left]
[Bullet pointed job description lines]

For my future positions, the second line was [position] (en dash) Beginning [date] (anticipated)

So:

Judicial clerk, Beginning [Date] (anticipated)

My current resume, if I have to send it out for any reason, has

[Firm]
Associate - [Practice Area], Beginning [date] (anticipated)

Likening this to "future skills" and so on is ridiculous.

I agree with the anonymous above, this is something you definitely need to list on your resume. I interned at the SEC during my 2L fall semester, and that was something that was frequently commented on favorably during OCI.

What I put was:

Securities and Exchange Commission, Washington, D.C.
Law Student Intern
Beginning September 15, 2010
Selected to intern with the SEC's Corporation Finance Division during the Fall 2010 semester.

Just to strengthen the last two anons - most schools require prospective transfers to have resumes reflecting expected summer work. So I think it is expected all around.
