But also don't neglect the very real consequences of looking like a jackass in a small field where everyone knows each other.
When DF is warning of potential blowback, it is likely prudent to listen.

OP here with an update. I dropped the news to Firm A earlier this month. The partner there who I talked to was definitely not happy, said he found the situation to be "troubling." Aside from that awkward phone call, though, there's been no blowback so far.
