I thought I had a pretty interesting background, but it's now over 50 applications that I've sent out, many with connections, and not one positive response (not even a grades request). Anyone else in the same boat and starting to worry? I'm wondering if there's something bad in my cover letter or something.
+1

1 rejection, 1 "we don't hire in that office", and 1 "we aren't hiring yet." Other than that, just silence. 30+ apps and that is all I have to show for myself.

Does anyone know if firms universally grade request or do they do some sort of prescreen and only request grades from applicants they'd be interested in?

@piccolittle: nope it's not just you. I've gotten no responses or dings despite having connections. But I'm not sure what kind of connections you mean - I don't have family ties in my school's town, for example, but I've gone to a lot of firm events here and keep meeting the same people at these events. Not that it helped.

silence + dings here too as well

got 1 grade request from a firm but they have very strict standards and I am likely out of the running for that anyways :(

Almost positive that they prescreen before asking for grades.

Shout out to one firm for being civil - it's the first non-rejection response I've gotten. It was an acknowledgement of my application the next morning and a "happy holidays!". I'll take it lol

Yeah, it's sad that I was kind of excited to receive my rejection from Nutter. They took the trouble to ding me politely instead of ignoring me - it was by actual snail mail on firm letterhead, in a firm envelope, signed in ink by the recruiting person. Classy stuff.

I went through this process last year (finding a 1L job) and it takes forever. Most of the V100 firms will complete their hiring by mid-February, so don't worry about anything until late January. Also, welcome to the job hunt, where you check your email/phone every 10 minutes. Government takes FOREVER--I applied with a pretty good agency in late December of last year and got an offer in the first week of April. The wait sucks, but it's part of the game.

Good luck all.

Curious as to what impact undergraduate grades had for firms that requested them due to lack of law school grades? People get offers to firms for 1L SA with just UG grades?

Look up based on phone number. Of course, if you applied to several in the same courthouse, they may all show up the same on caller ID.

You should really screen your calls, then you'll have a voicemail to refer to. But yeah, just try googling the phone number to see what comes up, or check the courthouse website and check the numbers there.

A little random, but is black the only appropriate color for a leather folder/portfolio that you would take on an interview or to a reception? I was going to grab a maroon-ish looking one, but I'm worried it might look a little "flashy" or whatnot.

Go with black. Last thing you wanna do is stand out b/c of a maroon padfolio.

First invitation to interview with a Chicago firm. So fucking stoked though I don't want to get my hopes up. But Jesus would being able to stay in Chicago AND make money be amazing.

Does going to those 1L New years receptions help with employment chances or is it more like a informal social gathering?

NY firm. Almost tempted to out them, but I have mixed feelings. Should I be:

a) depressed because firms are obviously reading my materials quickly and the ominous silence from the rest of them does not bode well;
b) depressed because they rejected me that quickly; or
c) happy that they responded at all instead of leaving me hanging on naive hope for months?

I might have to go with c) just to keep my sanity. On that note, would anyone mind maybe having a look at my cover letter in case there is anything I/CSO missed? I can PM it to you.

Hey all,

T10 student. Of course do not know grades. OK WE. Math undergraduate degree with 3.9+ GPA.

What are the chances of landing an SA position as a non-URM student?

Second, how much does 1L summer position affect 2L summer employment? I already have a RA offer to work with a very prominent professor at the law school, researching the area of law that interests me the most. I really want to do this job but also want to put myself in the best position possible to land BigLaw for 2L summer.

Thanks.

Recently received a response from a V100 firm requesting grades as they become available and inviting me to attend a New Year's reception--are we supposed to RSVP to these things? No instructions are given in the e-mail, just kind of a "You're invited, and here's our snazzy .jpg invitation to make it look even cooler!" It's not publicly advertised from what I can tell...assuming we are supposed to RSVP, do these receptions even matter? I'll be in town, but for only 3-4 days...not sure I want to spend it trying to schmooze biglaw attorneys since I have zero schmoozing skills.

Hi all,

I got a position with the CDCA AUSO recently, and have a firm interview in a week. I also sent out a bunch of application to judges, and I havent heard back from them. Admittedly, I started applying later, but should I hold out for the firm? and/or tell the firm that I have to get back to the AUSO, and should I hold out for a judge.

The CDCA does not split summers. (and I got an offer with the civil division)

any experience with this?
