Views on a 1 week/8 week/5 week split

I've accepted an offer from a firm for 8 weeks during the summer. The firm has not told when those 8 weeks will begin and end, but it will likely be soon after school is out (within 2 weeks probably). Another firm has offered me a 6 week position. Because I don't know when school will begin in the fall or when I will finish with the firm firm, I'm not sure that I can commit to the second firm (which I really like). If my first firm waits until 2 weeks after school has finished to begin my summer, the second firm has offered to let me do one week with them, then go to the "first" firm for 8 weeks, and then go back to the "second" firm for 5 weeks (to meet their 6 week requirement).

Alternatively, I have another firm that is willing to let me work just 5 weeks for the second half without having to work the 1/8/5 split. I like this firm, but not as much as the other second half firm. They're all in pretty much the same market.

Is it worth it to split the summer in 1/8/5 format, or would that create a really awkward spot with the second firm? I don't know if it's something that I would be comfortable doing (work a week, go to another firm for 8, then go back for 5) since it would definitely be disruptive for all involved -- especially when I have the alternative firm that, based on our conversations, says it "expects" me to accept the second half with it?

This is really bizarre, and I'm surprised that the second firm allowed it. Do you have one that you like more than the other?

Have you talked to the first firm about splitting or moving your start date up a week? Why do you not know when school will start? I think you should find these things out before you make any moves. Also, maybe my little brain is just not functioning properly today, but I am very confused by this whole situation.

I agree that it's bizarre. I prefer the 6 week firm that will allow me to split considerably more than the 5 week firm (but I don't know if I like them enough to deal with this). I don't know when school will begin because my school has not decided on the academic calendar for next year (meaning they haven't even decided when school will start in the fall, which is ridiculous). I've asked the person who makes the calendar about it but to no avail. Finally, the first firm won't split. They require 8 weeks and are unwillingly to bend that. In fact, they discourage students from working at other firms during the summer even if the work is after being with them and wouldn't interfere.

While that would be an option if it came down to it, it's definitely a last resort that I would prefer to avoid.
