I consider virtually every firm in the NLJ100 (firms over ~500 attorneys) to be "national BigLaw." There are some major exceptions in the NLJ100 that I would consider "regional BigLaw" - like Baker Donelson, Blank Rome, Faegre & Benson, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, Shook Hardy & Bacon, Edwards Angell, etc. Regional BigLaw firms are big, but they generally (a) have few big market (NYC, DC, Chicago, SF/SV, LA) offices, and (b) are restricted to one coast, or just one geographical region. "National BigLaw" firms have a major presence in at least one of the top legal markets, and they tend to be bicoastal.

The rest of the NLJ250 is a mix mostly composed of regional BigLaw, with some national BigLaw (Cahill, Irell, Wachtell, Munger, PBWT), and MidLaw thrown in. Anything outside the NLJ250 I would consider to be boutique, MidLaw, SmallLaw, or the dreaded "ShitLaw."

Yes, arbitrary categorizations are so ridiculous. That's why lawyers and judges never categorize things using rules and standards.

firms that pay "market" in their respective market—this could include midlaw, secondary biglaw and boutiques

typically means above 100K in larger cities (around 160 in the largest markets)
sometimes means 80-90K in small markets

regardless of where it is, you're going to be working long hours, but your income will be well above most other entry level positions (and even managerial ones) in other industries—relative in your market, of course
