Is there a better firm for a young litigator?
I'm a 3L with a decent COA 2/9/7 clerkship next year. What does it take to get a job at this place? Which is the best office?

one of the toughest firms to get a job at...don't waste your time with them unless your SCOTUS material

Susman will usually recruit from the very top of the class, and tends to look at more than just numbers (but they want high numbers, too). The full range of skills, personality traits, and attributes is highly important to them. In addition, they have a tradition of hiring people who were on editorial boards of well-known journals, especially those in leadership position (EIC, ME, etc.), and require you to have a clerkship lined up before you can be taken on full-time. Susman tends to be very comprehensive when looking at applicants. I am not sure if the SCOTUS claim is accurate, since they tend to get the very best well-rounded litigators they can. I came away with the impression that it's not the firm that will simply pick the highest GPA in front of them, but rather will pick someone they know will be a top litigator (and not just a good memo-drafter). Think all-star drafts, not test-taking nerds.
The summer program (in the past at least) is 4 weeks; a typical summer will be 6 weeks with one firm, 4 weeks with Susman, and the rest of your summer on editorial board work.

Hilarious/unnecessary Susman trolling on behalf of OP.
OP also overstated the SCOTUS thing. I know two people who work there. They certainly have great credentials, but neither were near "SCOTUS material." They had great federal clerkships, but not with feeder type judges.
Susman is great, but so are Bartlit Beck, Kellogg Huber, Keker. Munger as well. I don't think there's a clear "best place" to be a young litigator.

Susman is awesome, but it's not all about grades. People top 5% at HYS won't get a CB while folks barely top third will. They only take 6-8 summers a year; grades are important but not dispositive. They can be picky. And they are.

Getting Susman is very, very hard. The initial grade threshold isn't that high. If you can get a WLRK callback, you have necessary grades to get a Susman callback. However, they take barely anyone, and my perception has been that you basically need to have a wilddog personality factor to get a job-- think The Office's James Spader-boss-type personality. Also, SAing does not mean you are getting a job my any means, I think they take less than 1/2 of the clerks they bring in.

I like how people on these threads assume those hired by S+G must be uber type-A or "wilddog" personalities. These people obviously have not met anyone hired by S+G.

+1. I know a Susman SA and he/she is definitely not a Type A person. He/she has top grades and is well spoken, but not very social or aggressive.
