3L callback been over 7 weeks with no response

Had a callback with a secondary biglaw firm before labor day. I haven't gotten a rejection letter yet and it has been over 7 weeks.

About a month ago, I emailed a partner that I met with and connected very well with asking her about a timeline... no response....

Is this normal? Should I just email HR?

I am in a similar place with 2 different firms, one of them is like 9 weeks, the other is 5. Not sure if there is really anything to do at this point. My sense, based my limited experience, is that 3L hiring seems to be slower.

Op- i know the firm has sent out rejection letters out already, so it is weird that they didn't send me a letter or bother to contact me about a timeline.

3L hiring is slower since firms typically must wait until Nov. 1st or so before they know for sure how many of their summers are returning to the firm.

Is this some sort of NALP rule or just a rule of thumb? I can definitely tolerate waiting another week before hearing back from the firm I interviewed with a week ago.

I am not sure there is a rule of thumb when firms are supposed to get back to you if you are a 3L. I got an offer the same day as one of my callbacks and another the week after.

Rather than contacting a partner, you could contact recruiting. Once they've done an interview, partners and associates aren't actually involved in the process much. At best they might hear which of the candidates they interviewed got an offer. Recruiting is much more likely to know what's going on.

NALP-member firms must give their summers until Nov. 1st to accept or decline their offers to join the firm as full-time associates. As a result, a firm may not know how many of its summers will be returning to the firm until (or shortly before) Nov. 1st. Naturally, firms are reluctant to take on 3Ls without knowing how many of its summers are returning, so this may help explain the lag you've experienced.
