From someone interning at the SEC this semester, I can tell you from speaking with attorneys that there will probably be no ACPs for this year. They are hardly hiring laterals.

So if we have not even received an initial interview, it's likely not happening at this point?

I would gather it's done unless you had an initial interview. Some of the divisions not mentioned like Risk Fin, OGC, IM or OIG might still be hiring from the initially screened pool.

What's the benefit to doing SEC Honors as a 2L if they've gotten rid of ACP then?

If you wanted something like NYS Dept of Finance on graduation or wanted a career spot in the OCC/FDIC entry hiring programs.

For those that have received offers, how long do they give you to accept or decline?

One day to pick from among the divisions if you had multiple offers. Twenty-eight days to give them an answer on the division you selected as your top choice.

Can anyone explain what the phone screening interviews are like? Do they really expect you to know the specifics of Dodd-Frank Act and the like?

This http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 3&t=167234 makes me nervous.

Anyone willing to share what the interview process is like?

Mine was like a standard interview, no substantive questions about securities (so nothing about Dodd-Frank Act or anything like that). Questions like why SEC, which divisions, etc.

I'm still waiting to hear back from my interview a couple weeks ago.

They don't expect you to have memorized Dodd-Frank or the SEA, but passing knowledge of some legislative reworkings and primary enforcement mechanisms of the SEA score a lot of points with them. Remember, you're up against ~1000 people for 75 slots and a lot of those folks have experience in the financial industry. If you haven't at least been reading the WSJ or FT, you may come across as naive.

I had a phone interview with two people around September 28th I think, because it was right after their first round of screenings on Sept. 14th. (They liked my 1L summer experience at the CFTC and I have an MPP from GSPP...so I'm a pretty ace government recruit...on paper...) I jabbed about how it sucks that Congress took away their funding on the eave of a a slew of rulemakings, the the new recklessness standards for fraud were cool, and that I was less interested in writing no-action letters for corporations than preventing the next catastrophe: I wanted to get into Risk, Strategy, and Financial Innovation (Risk Fin).

And while they don't hire people directly out of law school frequently, the SEC pays great deference to candidates with prior SEC, FTC, and DOJ Honors experiences. So I mentioned that I was interested in the Honors program because I thought working for them full time afterward would be cool.

I haven't heard anything since then. That's ok, though, I'm going to go another direction for summer employment. Plaintiff's bar is the real cop on the beat; Government is neutered by the Right and business interests.

I was at the SEC last summer and I have to say you seem like you have a really healthy perspective on the industry, as evidenced by your interest in the plaintiff's bar. If I may ask- how are you learning about opportunities on the plaintiff's side? I think a huge fault of my school is that they give us no information on plaintiff's firms. I'm trying to learn more now, but you're smart to get a head start as a 2L.

I'm doing the Summer Honors program with the Enforcement division as a 2L. Honestly tho, i would have preferred a SA position this summer, but i took this 'cus my 28 day timer was about out and I didn't want to risk it. Does anyone know if 2L's doing this summer program have any luck finding work in the corporate field? I know the SEC isn't going to hire many (or any) of the interns. Some professors I talked to seemed pretty enthusiastic about it, and one prof compared it to working as a federal clerk. Thoughts?

For anyone who's had this internship before - what's the dress code working at the SEC summer program?

I'm traditional and wear a suit and tie. But, most of the other interns wear an open collared dress shirt and slacks. I see some attorneys wearing jeans, but I gather it is frowned upon.

Question-

What's the security clearance for the SEC? How in depth is it and kind of stuff are they looking for?

It's no more in depth than any other federal agency, but I think you need to declare your investment holdings (I forget from 6 months ago). I don't know what they are looking for, but I assume the regular: past crimes, recent drug use, document ethics violations, high/defaulted debt and holes in your background (like living arrangements you can't account for).

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
