Orrick NY vs. Baker Botts NY

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Oct 05, 2011 8:21 am

I have these two--on the one hand, I've been hearing some unsettling rumors regarding Orrick's financial situation. On the other hand, its a much bigger office, I've be exposed to more specialties there, and I overall liked the firm better. Also, to balance out the rumors regarding the finances--they did just sign five major partners, and last year they offered 47/52 of their summers. Thoughts?

Personally I'd go Orrick, esp if I was interested in finance, because you're right, its a much bigger office, and you liked it more. That being said, 47/52 is a pretty shitty number for a biglaw firm. I'm not sure what BB's offer rate was but I bet it's higher.

Regarding the health of the firm, the 5 dudes who just joined are all pretty huge rainmakers (esp the 2 from milbank). To me, that's a pretty big confidence booster for the firm. They probably were given access to Orrick's books and they still decided to join the firm. I doubt the firm is going to implode.

Another thing to consider is pay. Orrick is not lockstep, so you'll probably make less money there.

Orrick is lockstep the first three years. And from what I've heard, the firm is quite busy these days.
