We'll get back to you in a few weeks
I've been on a number of callbacks and gotten a number of rejections. On almost all of them, the last interviewer or the recruiter who walked me out said that they were taking their time in the process and wouldn't be in touch for a week or two and not to worry. Ignoring outliers like Cravath or S&C, where insta-offers happen all the time, it seems like everyone I know who got an offer, got it within a day or two of the callback. This is despite the several recruiters saying the hiring committee wasn't meeting for a week. Is that how they cushion the blow and signal you aren't getting an offer? Or do they just tell everyone that and then surprise the people who get offers?

Even some of the biggest name NYC firms do indeed take a week to give out offers. DPW and STB both took a week to get back to me with offers, and I know of people who heard from other big NYC firms after a little over a week. Several weeks is highly unusual for a big firm in NYC, but it might be normal in smaller markets or for small firms or boutiques that are only interviewing a few people.

You never know. I think almost all firms keep a reserve of people on what amounts to a waitlist, in case their yield is low enough where they need to dip into the "maybe" pile.
I received one offer within 24 hours of an interview, another after 4 days, and another after 5 weeks. Obviously your odds of getting a yes diminish as time goes by though.
