2L job in finance -> how would that look during 3L OCI?

Postby Anonymous User » Wed Sep 28, 2011 12:14 pm

I'm thinking of doing an MBA type of summer job for 2L. I still want to do 3L OCI and get a law firm job. Any thoughts?

did you turn down a 2L firm job for it? did you strike out at 2L oci? if so, your job could be a useful selling point during 3L oci, but 3L oci is still a crapshoot

Assuming this is a fairly prestigious job that could lead to post-law school employment...

Pretty bad. This looks like you plan to jump to finance as soon as possible. Firms don't want to hire people who are planning to jump ship in a few years. Yes, they expect you to get out after a while, but they want to make money off of you first. This is especially true of 3L OCI, when firms are trying to fill open spots where they really need more lawyers. If you're serious about ever getting a biglaw job, be a biglaw summer associate if that option is available. (Although, if the choice is between finance job or nothing/not an SA, go to the finance job.)

If this isn't a prestigious job, well, it will hurt because, even if you do have biglaw offers, they will assume no one wanted you at 2L OCI and wonder why.

3L OCI is for people who already have offers, not for people who couldn't land a legal job 2L.
