thinking of doing this myself. why not work for a prestigious nyc firm with a prestigious DC office and transfer over once you start working?

From what I understand, most firms make it difficult to transfer practice groups, let alone offices. If you want to work in DC, your best bet will always be to apply to jobs in DC.

Doesn't have to be Skadden. It can be a firm with a prestigious NYC office and a prestigious DC office, an NYC office and a prestigious DC office, or a prestigious NYC office with a DC office. Could be Skadden, A&P, Gibson, Kirkland, Covington, WilmerHale, Cleary, whatever.

Only Skadden has both a prestigious NY and prestigious DC office though. I seriously doubt firms like A&P or WilmerHale, DC powerhouses with middling NYC offices, are going to let people do this on a regular basis. If they did, everybody would be trying to do it.

OP here. At my firm you can transfer to any office if you have a compelling reason. Doesn't have to be anything academically or work related. I just thought it was interesting.

Skadden does allow associates to move between offices.

Someone I know is thinking of doing this with GDC (summer in NY, then go to the DC office). But, he's clerking for the DC Circuit first so he could probably just get in through the front door.
