There are a ton of firms in LA with class sizes over 2 or 3... Latham, Quinn, Paul Hastings, Skadden, etc etc etc. Am I missing something here?

This is true, firms like Latham, Quinn, Paul Hastings, Skadden, Gibson Dunn, and O'Melveny have class sizes well over 2 or 3. Based on hiring statistics from my school (USC/UCLA) they also very rarely hire outside of the top 10%. So if you're not in the top 10%, you likely won't get a callback/offer at an LA firm with a big class size. There are exceptions to this of course.

Agreed. In LA Paul Hastings only had around 12-14 spots, Skadden 12, etc. So a "big" class size is by no means big compared to NYC firms that hire 40. Still incredibly competitive for USC/UCLA students.

Agreed. In retrospect, I should have transferred to GULC and taken a shot at NYC/DC. L.A. has been brutal.

Some NYC firms hire 100-150, or at least 50+. Even out of UCLA I think if people really want BigLaw they should bid / mass mail NYC.

No news. I thought I'd be getting some rejections by now but nothing. All of my CBs were before 9/7.

I had 10 CBs with big firms in LA but I think my mistake was to be too focused on LA. 7 out of the 10 firms I had CBs with were only hiring 2-5 people even though they are huge firms nationally. I found that at the majority of my CBs I was competing with the likes of HYS and MVP. UCLA is a great school locally but we are not in the T14.

Did a majority of USC/UCLA students get biglaw positions?

I can confirm this. Top 25% USC, no offer. From what I gather, people with lower ranks got offers, but only if they had law review. People wihtout law review got offers, but only with much highers GPAs (like top 10%). Unemployment is roughly 75% at graduation (not nine months, but the day you leave school, meaning government honors programs and biglaw kiddies that get offers while in school).

0Ls reading this: run for the hills and never look back.

What USC do you go to? I'm at USC and there is no way this is the case. 75%? C'mon dude.

Top 35% at USC get jobs out of OCI.

I would say that probably includes OCI II which is full of below market rate firms/government jobs.

There were very few gov. agencies/firms at OCI II. I doubt OCI II changes the "employed from OCI statistic" from 25% to 35%.

Actually there are about 200 2Ls at USC. 25% would be 50 people and 35% would be 70 people. With the ~12 employers that came to OCI II, it is entirely possible that around 20 students were hired which turns 25% to 35%.

Not to dwell on this, but CSO releases a "Where Students Worked" guide and last year 5 students reported jobs from OCI II, so most jobs still come from OCI I.

Actually the list from CSO also includes jobs at firms that are neither from OCI I or OCI II.

USC and UCLA are not the same. UCLA is a better school and has better outcomes—especially on a national level.

I think big firms (especially in CA, where most of the graduates end up applying) view them as the same.

UCLA student here. Don't know my class rank.. (How do we reliably infer this?) I was above the median GPA, albeit slightly. I interviewed at about 10 firms and got 4 callbacks. I got two offers from V50 (one in San Diego, another in LA). I accepted the LA firm offer (contracts pun fully intended) this week.

I feel like a LOT of my "success" came from my personality and not from my grades. My grades were okay. Most of my interviews consisted of one or two serious questions and the remainder of the time was spent laughing, joking around. I'm serious (both screener and callback). I liked the interviewers (and made sure to show it), and they liked me (they tried not to show it too much, but it was clear). My point: Too much emphasis I think is put on GPAs, percentiles, Law Review (I'm on a journal, but not LR).. Many people on LR at UCLA I've heard didn't get offers...

Serious question - What rank is a 4.0 at UCLA?

I programmed an Excel chart to estimate the class rank given a cummulative GPA at UCLA Law.
The percentage of A, B/B+, C's in a "published" report was used in the Monte Carlo simulation.
I seeded the grade for the entire class with this distribution.
I then used a normal disribution to predict the grade for the next course.
I relax the curve for 2L and 3L because of the actual easier curve and also to account for
P/NP and other easier classes.

The most important missing piece for my simulation is the correlation from the seed grade.
A normal distribution is not unreasonable, but I have no information on the standrad distribution
other than my daughter's grades.
If you can post the grades for yourself at UCLA, I can do a better estimate.
Example follows:
1L A, A-, B-, C, B+, B(2 semesters)
2L A A A A A B+( 2 units)

I will post my estimation from the Excel chart when I get home Friday night.

From what I gather, 3.9+ is top 5%. From there'd I guess that a 4.0 puts you in the top 3-4% (e.g., between students 10 and 15 in terms of ranking). Perhaps a bit higher. Fair warning: not much too much science behind these guesses, just basing this off of general knowledge regarding historical medians & percentile breakdowns.

USC put 30% in big law last year, whereas UCLA put 20% in. UCLA is better because US news says it's better?

Information about 2011 2L employment at USC (according to a packet distributed by CSO) 86 people got 2L SAs in 2011.
Fwiw, c/o 2013 has around 215 students.

* I don't think all of these were necessarily THROUGH OCI, but they were with employers that were at OCI.
