Parking for associates?

Postby 1L1284 » Fri Sep 23, 2011 1:43 pm

I know as a summer associate firms will cover the parking fee in large cities (SF/NY/LA). Do they tend to cover the parking fees as a full time associate too or are you on your own? I think SF can go up to $400+ a month....

I can't speak for all firms, but I am unaware of any NYC firms that pay parking fees for summers or real associates. Parking here is like renting another apartment, and having a car in the first place is stupid.

Yeah in NYC that sounds like an unreasonable expectation to me, though I don't know specifically about policies. Maybe some will cover it for your summer under the umbrella of relocation expenses? Maybe more common in LA but nobody really owns a car in NYC.

In DC, everyone seemed to take mass transit as well.

Also, why is this anonymous? Not EVERYTHING needs to be anon.

I know some Bay Area firms (though this may mainly be Palo Alto and Oakland) have their own parking structures, which I presume it's free for associates to park in. All the San Francisco associates I spoke with do not actually drive to work -- they either live close enough to walk or can take a quick BART or other public transport in. I have not seen any other discussion of parking budget and would be really surprised if they allocated money for you to keep a car parked at your residence -- we're highly overpaid as it is. I don't know about LA though.

Paul Hastings LA pays for parking downtown for all summers and associates. If you don't have a car and don't need the space, I believe they put $160 extra into your paycheck each month.

This information can easily be found on firm's NALP forms under benefits.
