Which firms care about undergrad GPA?

Postby Bauer24 » Wed Sep 21, 2011 4:31 pm

I am applying to law school this year as a high LSAT/low GPA splitter.

Are there any firms which really pay attention to undergrad grades?
I'm not just talking about firms which ask for UG transcripts but firms that are known for using UG GPA in making decisions as to whom to hire/whom to interview.

If so, I want to know. I think those are the firms that I'll have the least chance of getting an internship/job offer at and possibly firms that I would like to avoid altogether [assuming I can do well enough to be at "the top of my class" at law school].

The only firm I have known to ask for UG transcripts is Cravath. I spoke with a partner there who said they just wanted to check to see if you took basket-weaving for four years or actually challenged yourself. So they seem to take your courses into consideration but not necessarily your nominal GPA.

I have also heard that KL Gates asks for LSAT score.

it's way too early for you to be considering firm choices.

That said, it looks good to have a high ugpa, but, with the exception of a few firms, law school, LS grades and law review are really the only thing they care about. I wouldn't worry about this. (Especially as a 0L)

There's really no reason you should be thinking about what firms you're going to apply to now. You have no basis on which to make that decision, and it's not the kind of decision that takes 2 years to make. My experience, however, is that few firms even ask for a UG transcript. Like, none that I've ever interviewed with. I think Cravath (someone correct me if I'm wrong) is an exception. If you apply for clerkships, it's 50/50 but most judges will be easily assuaged by any sort of convincing explanation. Really though, your top priority should be writing a convincing grade explanation in your law school apps, a good essay, and then, in the spring or summer, thinking about how you're going to do well at the school where you end up and whether you'd consider transferring if you do do well.

Offices are different but there is an ATL post about it- not that ATL is the most reliable news source.

True, I can only speak to what I experienced in one of their mid-sized/smaller offices (not Seattle or Pittsburgh).
