The V3 thing is even more hilarious because it's changed since OP's post. 2014 V3 included S&C but not Skadden. 2015 V3 now includes Skadden but not S&C.

Sucks for people working at S&C. They're basically fucked career-wise.

Vault says STB and DPW are still career black holes. OP would certainly agree.

Skadden's probably the worst of the V5 to get into finance. No real relationships with the big banks unlike S&C/DPW and lacking the prestige of Wachtell and Cravath.

What's the roadmap for a second year V10 M&A associate to transfer to ibanking?

Here's a question: let's say you successfully make "the jump" into IBD. What if you're not cut out for it (in terms of personal preference, not skill)? Could you jump back to a top firm?

Depends more on the form and how you left the first time. I know plenty of associates who left on amicable terms for places conferring even less transferable skills who still managed to come back. Firm didn't advance them the class years, but I think that's a fair trade.

Related question: what's an ideal amount of time to stay in big law before jumping? Or do you try to get out asap?

Anecdotal, take for what it's worth:

Summered at S&C this year and looked at every person who had left the firm over the past 6 months (the intranet site posts announcements). When people left to finance type jobs (banks, funds, etc.) I looked them up on LinkedIn or Google to see what the story was.

Everyone I could identify (12-15 people) had either previously worked in finance, had an MBA, or took a legal/compliance job at the bank/fund. Meaning -- I couldn't find a single case where someone had left the firm to work on the business side of a bank/fund without previous relevant experience. Whether people go to banks/funds as assistant GC's and then transfer into more business-type roles, I have no idea.

of course this is a limited sample size and admittedly I don't have perfect information about each case. In any case, hope it helps.
