Just Accepted A SA Offer from Debevoise

Postby Anonymous User » Tue Sep 06, 2011 9:14 am

I just accepted a SA offer from Debevoise and was wondering if anyone has worked there and could comment on their experiences with the firm or if anyone has had a friend who has worked there and has heard about the firm. It seems TLS has comparatively few posts on this firm.

Seems a little late to be asking after you've already accepted.

/Doesn't know anything about Debevoise.

wow.

I obviously made the decision after research. I also didn't have another comparable offer to choose from. I just didn't have any access to personal anecdotes and was hoping someone did as I am still interested in learning about the firm I will be working for.

seems like everyoje is cranky tday

Does frankly seem a little silly to be accepting then asking. Why accept so quickly? You have 45 days, they are unlikely to pull the offer. Why not ask to meet with some more people first?

I will say (unfortunately) that the things I hear from prior year associate / summer associates are not amazing. But could be a personality clash or other thing. Best of luck.

so now that I have accepted m offer I should not be asking about the firm? Got the memo. Now I know why I was hesitant about posting on an online forum asking a question

done with OCI. Only had one offer. Accepted it. No point in sitting on it. Just wanted to learn more

Yeah, but it stank for law firms when it was 45 days. Tough deal ya know?

OP was just looking for some anecdotes, don't know why people had to jump down his throat.

Congrats on your offer, do you mind posting some stats?

I hear ya man--people are being a bit trolly. If you want to get unadulterated information from people who know what they are talking about, try this:

I went to my OCS and asked if they knew anyone who summered at my firm. They did (if they don't or won't disclose, then ask around your friends/professors/search Debevoise bios for your alma). I emailed a few of them and offered the one who was particularly helpful/outgoing a free lunch near the firm if I could bend his ear for 20 minutes. It worked out great and he actually insisted on paying for lunch! He works for the firm now, so it was great coming into the summer with someone already in my corner. Hope this helps.

Note: I just so happened to be in the area near my firm while visiting my gf, but if you're far away then just arrange a short phone call.

Is this a 1L or 2L for you?

Top 15% at a T14 and only one offer makes me a little worried. Unless its 1L then.... Good job!

1L OCI or 2L OCI.

Anyways, I was under the impression 2L OCI usually doesn't lead to offers?

I have a good friend who works at Debevoise (NY) and recently spoke to him about it and NYC firms generally. He's on the corporate side of the firm and, for the most part, really enjoys it. The hours are typical of NYC and, depending your practice group, could range from 40-65, but it's manageable if you know into what you are getting yourself. He also made it a point to mention that the partners and attorneys at D&P are extremely smart and, again, for the most part, great people to work for/with.

Congrats and good luck!

1L OCI or 2L OCI.

There are three (sometimes more) OCIs.

1L OCI: In January/February of 1L, for the following summer (between 1L and 2L). Generally a joke, jobs mostly go to minorities or people with really impressive corporate WE (investment bankers and stuff)--but as it's so hard to land a job from this, no one cares what you do for 1L summer as long as it's legal work.
2L OCI: In August before 2L, for the following summer (between 2L and 3L). Where the jobs are.
3L OCI: Same as 2L OCI, only you're a 3L and no one wants to hire you. Hiring for post-graduation.

He's talking about 2L OCI, which is after 1L and before 2L. Yes, it's weird that this person has only one offer, but only in the sense that it's weird to have only one offer and have that offer be Debevoise. Usually people without options get their only offer from a much less highly regarded firm. Also unusual given the OP's grades, but if you're socially awkward or immature, it can definitely happen.

Oh okay I assumed that 1L OCI was just the OCI right after spring of 1L. I didn't realize there was one in the winter of 1L as well.
