I am outing Mayer Brown right here, right now.
I emailed them asking for an update on Monday. They told me I'd hear from them the next week. Then I get a rejection in the mail- dated that Monday.
What in blazes is that?

My guess either is that you didn't talk to the person who made the decision or they have a strict no-dinging-over-the-phone policy.

Legal recruiter of a firm called me about a week after my callback, saying multiple times I was one of the firm's top candidates and the committee had great things to say about me, but the firm needed to be fair and conduct its last set of callbacks before extending offers. It's been one week, and I heard recently the firm extended an offer to a student from another school. Haven't heard of offers from my own school yet. Not sure if this firm extends all offers at once.

Does this mean I'm out? And do legal recruiters usually leave voicemails like that...?

I got a call like that and got the offer a couple weeks later. They expedited their process for me.

Could be, it was by email. I suppose my beef is that they told me I'd hear the next week while the letter was already in the mail. If they didn't want to ding by email, they could have said I'd hear shortly.

I should also complain about another firm, where I was pretty friendly with the hiring partner who had been my screener, then I had met her at a reception, then again at my CB, and had emailed. We were friendly.
I emailed her for an update, she responded 5 minutes later with a form email rejection. Really? Form email?

Central FL midsize market paying firm. Shouldn't say more.

I didn't do anything but send nice thank you notes and express sincere interest when they called. It helps that the CB was a dream and that I have some connections.

Maybe the hiring committee meets in a couple days. I wouldn't assume rejection.

I don't think TLS can tell you anything you don't already know... more likely than not you've got a rejection in the mail. It could be that they were waiting until they finished all their callbacks to get offers out and all they meant was "the hiring committee will be meeting in a couple of days when callbacks are done to discuss offers" and decisions won't be made until then. In that case, you're still alive. Hell, it could be that you are about to get an offer but they have to finish callbacks first before they're allowed to officially extend you the offer. But, facing reality, it's probably (not definitely) a rejection. Assume nothing until you have a final decision.

I've left the USS Worried and jumped straight on the USS Giving Up on Legal Employment.

Please do not do that, you're in a very enviable position - keep looking, there are various firms that hire much, much later in the year. While they are not market paying and likely not NLJ250, a solid 2L clerkship will pay some bills and you should be in a great position for clerkships next year if you can maintain your gpa.

I personally just wish that I'd understood two years ago that "bad legal market" meant that a 165 LSAT = never being a "real" lawyer (biglaw, government, major public interest), no matter how well I did afterwards.When law school's over, I'll just do med school. It's by no means what I wanted to do as a career, but I've got the numbers, and it'll actually pay the loans.

I'm sorry, but this just isn't true. Case in point: I got a mediocre 160 on my LSAT, went to a lower T2, finished 1L at the top, transferred to a T14, and just (finally) got a biglaw offer. With several upcoming interviews remaining.

I think at a certain point your LSAT score stops being relevant. What matters much more are the subsequent choices you make and how much you hustle. Seriously...I got my offer due to hardcore mass-mailing.

I know how you feel. It's not too late. Don't give up. Keep mailing, following up, doing whatever it takes; and don't lose faith!

no ding on the final one yet, but offer calls apparently went out tonight. not sure what to do now. any advice? my particulars: Vandy/UT, will graduate with no debt, dont want to do shitlaw, and am interested in a "major" secondary market (Dallas/ATL/Houston) that is outside my school's typical region of employment.

I imagine they have a policy not to give decisions over the phone. People cry, people scream, people do all kinds of things. And it makes perfect sense that you have to "remind them" to ding you. Once they make their decision, they are done with you.

I think making a list of firms that do this would be very revealing.

Guess what, it's called a career, not a "start at the exact place where you already want to be"-eer. You may have to scrap for this summer and work for a decent job through 3L. Maybe then you start at a small practice or PI group, and after a few years you move on up somewhere else.

Most people don't start their careers at the "top" of what they want. Most people learn things and then get into a career where they build, grow, and move upward through the years. It's a mature notion, but it's reality for the vast, vast majority of people in the world, and that's not constrained to law.

I mostly agree with this in general, but unfortunately the way it works for "the vast, vast majority of people in the world" is the exact opposite of how it works for Biglaw lawyers. If you want Biglaw, you pretty much need to get it as a 2L summer. Sure, there's 3L OCI, and sure, some people clerk and then find Biglaw afterwards... but really, it's 2L summer or bust. So, while I agree with everything as it applies to "most people," it is still perfectly reasonable for someone to be disappointed at missing out on Biglaw as a 2L, because they're probably not going to "build, grow and move upward" into Biglaw later.

Also not sure why everyone has to be anonymous to discuss career paths.

I read on one of these forums about someone who got two rejections from the same firm, and then an offer from them!!
Odd that it keeps happening to you too - maybe the firm is revisiting the decisons? Don't want to give you false hope, but hey, who knows.
