Is anyone with an offer concerned about their history of long deferrals and the fact that they are hiring at pre-ITE rates while still absorbing the deferred associates?

If you are not concerned, you should be.

There is definitely cause for some concern... however, it's important to keep in mind that most firms have deferred associates and the longer deferrals (of one year rather than 6 months) were optional. Also, didn't Weil pay the deferred associates more than other firms? I actually talked to someone at Weil about the deferrals and he said that he did not anticipate that the firm would continue to defer because the system is unsustainable. Last year (and the year before) they cut the number of SAs for that very reason. I completely agree that it's something to think about, but I think it's something you should look out for with every firm.

Weil is starting the Class of 2011 in January... and gave them only a $10,000 salary advance.

And no, "most" firms haven't deferred associates this much. I know plenty of TTTs where Class of 2011 associates are starting or have started this month.

I agree it's something to be concerned about... And I agree that Weil has done it more than other firms and has continued to do it longer than other firms. I was just saying that a lot of firms have deferred people... and it's a risk you should consider regardless of where you choose to go.

Keep in mind that the c/o 2011 will be starting with some of the c/o 2010 that deferred until Jan 2012.

Perhaps. But the SA Class of 2011 will be much smaller than 2012, per the hiring partner. Just sayin'.

I'm sure they're not looking to expand the program again next year and then have to defer again.

Do you mean this in seriousness or sarcasm?

Different anon, but know quite a few people avoiding Weil based on concerns about deferrals, no-offer rates, and key partners leaving.

In seriousness. Deferring associates every year is not a good business model. At some point they've got to stop doing it.

Does anybody know Weil's expected 2012 SA class size? I know NALP says 36, but wondering if anybody has insight into whether that has changed. Thanks.

Thought they were trying for 100 firmwide? Can you link me to the NALP 36 figure? Thanks

There's an article out there that says they wanted 100 firmwide SA 2012. http://amlawdaily.typepad.com/amlawdail ... 8/oci.html

Wow, that's good news. Hopefully NYC office? (Though I suppose not, given that those have seemingly come quicker...)

I'm the one who said "commencing despair." I got an offer a few days ago! Forgot to update. There is hope yet. Anyone know about how 3 partners and a few associates leaving the patent group is going to affect the rankings and work?
