What is the big deal with being a transfer student?

Post by What the f.supp? » Sat Aug 20, 2011 6:25 pm

Hey folks, I honestly have no idea why being a transfer student is such a big deal for students when interviewing. I'm not a transfer student--just curious. Any thoughts?

Good question...

I'm guessing you mistakenly posted this anonymously?

I just feel like there is a substantial amount of discussion (e.g. in the "feeling down" thread) about being a transfer student.

Perhaps I'll rephrase: are transfer students treated/regarded any differently in interviews or when reviewing resumes than students who matriculated as 1Ls?

I don't think it's a big deal at all. In fact, in talking to most interviewers about this, it's a benefit because you obviously worked your butt off to get to your new school.

They back-doored their way into the school. Their success is due to one great year at a bad law school. What's impressive about that?

this isn't true of all transfers and, frankly, sounds kind of douchey and elitist.

In reality, the back door is the LSAT. Rocking 1L exams for 2 semesters is not easier. Consider 24 hours of exams vs. a 4.5 hr LSAT

It's just a little tougher for a transfer student to be able to accurately predict how he will be evaluated in the hiring process, that's all. And transfers generally feel like they gave up a fair amount (law review, lower tuition/scholarships, friends, etc) for the shot at OCI, so it becomes an even bigger deal.

And LOL at MrAnon.
