Any other 2Ls applying? I know for the Manhattan DA, at least, we cannot apply until November. Has anyone already applied for other area offices?

Op here. I'm at a non nyc top 14 with nyc connections and good grades. I know its a long shot given the public sector freezes, but it definitely would be a dream job.areyouinsane wrote:Dood the Manhattan DA is laying people off, not hiring them:

Even when/if they were hiring, these jobs are the longest of long shots to get. Hope you're from NYU/Columbia and not 'Bozo /Bklyn/ NYLS or ______ (insert NYC TTT toilet here).
Probably not taking on a big enough workload/pleaing enough cases fast enough.MrAnon wrote:Chronically underperformed? What does that even mean. How can you underperform. Its not about bringing in money and clients. Its about pleaing cases and taking criminals to trial, and they dont usually get off. Sounds like they just have to lay off for financial reasons.
Of course it's financial - how is it possible to "underperform" at a gov't job? Anyone who stays awake more than half the time at work is a real "go-getter" LOL.Chronically underperformed? Really? You don't think that a 500 attorney DA's office evaluates its attorneys? A chronically underperforming attorney is probably one who is routinely rate in the bottom 10% every year. There are certainly good and bad prosecutors out there.MrAnon wrote:Chronically underperformed? What does that even mean. How can you underperform. Its not about bringing in money and clients. Most of the criminal trials are in 100 or 111 Centre, not 60. Interned at DANY this summer - OP, feel free to ask any questions.areyouinsane wrote:Of course it's financial - how is it possible to "underperform" at a gov't job? There are very few trials anyway- 99% of these cases plea out (sorry to disappoint you Sam Waterston fans). In fact, most of those big fancy courtrooms at 60 Centre Street are full of lowlife shitlawyers stipping out trip n' slip "discovery" and haggling over fender benders. Although I am proud that I tried a jury case by myself in that building in 2007 for a - you guessed it- trip n' fall! I only got to do it because the judge wouldn't let us w/draw from the case and the D had no insurance, so it was a pyrrhic "victory" (i won a whopping 22 K verdict). Another problem with civil cases at 60 Centre Street (NY Supreme) is the famous "get 'em picked" Gammerman. This prick will make you pick a jury no matter what, even if the client is undergoing chemo or something like that. The only cool thing about him is that he dismissed Dan Blather's idiotic case against CBS News for canning him for that fake Bush memo story back in '04.
Thanks for taking questions. Do you know what DANY generally looks for in an intern? Also, while there's obviously a budget crunch, what are the prospects for 2L summer interns getting hired full time?Anonymous User wrote: Most of the criminal trials are in 100 or 111 Centre, not 60. Dedication to public service. I talked a lot during my intern interview about my previous public service work. Why do you want to be a prosecutor? They're big about good judgment too - prosecutorial discretion is a big buzzword around the office. Make sure you list good contacts - they actually go and call your contacts and talk to them extensively.Anonymous User wrote:Thanks for taking questions. Sorry to necro, but what grades do they look for? I had read that their current DA had turned hiring into a BigLaw style (t14, high grades, etc)Anonymous User wrote:Another former DANY intern here - just stepped in to dispel the idea that you need to be NYU/Columbia. That is simply 100% not true. Far from it, in fact.
