Re: 2011 GW OCI Thread
Can anyone with a technical background with plans to focus in patent law comment on their OCI results? Also, please specify type of technical background (EE, ME, CS, etc).
I especially curious how Mechanical Eng is doing compared to others.
Thanks

I can only speak to what I heard my IP friends talking about, but the way it was described to me is as follows.bbalcrzy23 wrote:Can anyone with a technical background with plans to focus in patent law comment on their OCI results? Also, please specify type of technical background (EE, ME, CS, etc).

1. Each year more and more students graduate with ME degrees.
2. Each year there are fewer and fewer jobs for ME IP positions, not because of increased competition but because the jobs just aren't as needed anymore
Also, from what they told, EE is the way to go.

Hey so I think the results are not actually final! After basically getting super depressed about it last night, this morning my favorite law firm (lol) switched me to preselect! YAY.

So in the future just keep these things to yourselfEco wrote:Hey so I think the results are not actually final! After basically getting super depressed about it last night, this morning my favorite law firm (lol) switched me to preselect! YAY.
What I'm saying is my results are, as of now, just as depressing as they were last night, just as depressing as they were this morning and just as depressing as they were before lunch...

Are these additional pre-selects coming from "pending" status or from "not selected" status?

Mine came from a not selected. Coincidentally from my top choice.

Well there goes my productivity for the REST OF THE DAY. Well, at least until 9 I guess.Anonymous User wrote:I also got another preselect added from a "not selected"
Can parties that are getting additional preselects post rough stats so we know if they are aligning among the top 5% or if they are more evenly distributed?

I got a preselect later today that I didn't have this morning. But, mind you, it was only my second. I have two preselects and two alternates right now. Marshall Scholar, 3.4, did not do journal competition.Anonymous User wrote:Well there goes my productivity for the REST OF THE DAY. Yeah my preselect came from a not selected. It's good news, I mean not for the fact that I have an extra interview, but because its a job that I really want/think I can get.

3LE with significant work experience. Marshall scholar.
Only 4 preselects! I didn't expect it to be so bad!

3L evening with 4 preselects isn't so bad if you look at the data from last year for 3Ls especially evening students.

yeah, but just curious, why do evening students fare so badly? just to be clear, 3LE means that I'm not graduating till 2013, so its not as bad as a 3L day.

Not sure why evening students fair worse, but they do.
I'm hearing a lot of horror stories this OCI. Pretty sad.

Re: 2011 GW OCI Thread
There is, of course, a significant percentage of evening students with jobs lined up through their daytime pursuit. The amount of evening students who are patent agents at Finnigan or other major firms is relatively large. They have no need for OCI.Eco wrote:Not sure why evening students fair worse, but they do.

The evening students left over, that have day jobs potentially unrelated to law, have no had opportunities to do internships or get any other legal experience. Therefore, when choosing between a 3.4 3LE with no experience and 3.4 2L who summered at DOJ, I think it's a pretty clear choice.

Transfer student with no science background and am interested in IP. Only got 3 preselects at OCI and 1 alternate. Feeling helpless right about now.

Why IP if no science background? Do you have patent paralegal experience or anything else that would convey to a firm that you'll be able to hold your own in that field?Anonymous User wrote:Transfer student with no science background and am interested in IP. yeah, that must be it. those of us that are PT have this problem. i'm going to be lucky to get my job to even give me a leave for 2012 summer (assuming that I even have an internship to take).
