I interviewed with Stearns Weaver last year as a 1L and NEVER heard anything back from them, even after emailing them a month after my CB to check my status. Very unprofessional firm in my opinion.

I got a screener ding as a 1L pretty quickly. Only took a couple months.

Also interviewed as a 1L, didn't hear anything back for about a month, took a job with another Miami firm for the summer (no brainer, really), e-mailed Stearns to let them know and thank them for the opportunity, no reply.

I have come to the conclusion that the Miami market is some sort of sick joke. Firms have 200 lawyers in town and are expecting 3-4 summers and like 10-15 laterals. Fuck that, just start in New York and lateral if you want to go back one day

Median at T10 and from Florida. Four Miami screeners during OCI resulted in two callbacks. Ding from one callback, waiting to hear back from the other. Meanwhile from my 10 NYC interviews, 4 callbacks, 2 offers.

They really are all about the laterals there, which is just AWESOME. -_-

It's doubly cool because now I'll wind up in NYC, where I'll probably specialize in some niche area of law Miami doesn't even have and therefore not even be able to lateral down there before the Atlantic claims it.

Top 25% at T10, from south Florida. Barely bid Miami, but in one of my callback interviews, most interviewers were basically trying to sell me the firm as a lateral opportunity, not even a place to start at. Strange, strange market.

It's good to hear other people are having the same frustrations with this market. Nevertheless firms do offer a handful of people SAs, and no one in this thread has posted anything (and this seems to be the time by which most Miami firms finish up making offers), so either they are not speaking up or they're just not on TLS...

It makes a lot of sense. Let New York train them, get well credentialed associates at the height of their profitability. I'm surprised more secondary markets don't do this.

LOL same here. I summered at one of the large florida only firms and the recruiting partner who I had a pretty solid relationship with and was able to speak with candidly pretty much told me to go to new york first and that she would love to have me back in the future. It is actually a smart business model but sucks for anyone who wanted to start in Miami if you are not one of the lucky ~30 or so SAs in a region with 6million+ people.

Among the 6 associates in my group, 4 were laterals. One starting next week is a direct hire, and the other will be a 1st year but did his SA in NYC.
