Does Covington check everyones references or is this a sign that you made it past some sort of preliminary screening? (like your writing sample/interview wasn't awful)

Efficiency demands that they only check those they might be interested in.

untrue. if the information costs are less than the added benefit of the referral, then efficiency would demand them to always check references.
