If you have an offer letter in hand and have accepted it, there is no shame in withdrawing and saving them the time in finishing the post-cb evaluation. If you haven't accepted or don't have an offer in hand, probably best to wait until you do just to play it safe.

Sorry for the naive question- I don't know that many people in our class.
lol. not even close.

doesn't mean that you're necessarily screwed if you're top 40%, but you are far from secure
Don't know if the 40% estimate is that off-base. From anecdotes it sounds like those focused on NYC have done alright. Didn't bid at all so can't speak on DC hiring, but obviously know it's a much tougher market. Curious to hear how DC, Chicago and Cali markets have treated GULC students this year.

Withdraw tomorrow morning. It will benefit everyone. OCS gave me this blurb to say when you call *CALL don't email*

"Thank you for arranging my call back. I really enjoyed my time at your firm, but I have decided to pursue other employment and wish to withdraw from consideration. Thank you again for your time." The firm would much rather get that call before they deliberate over whether or not to extend you an offer. When I did this, they asked me where I had accepted an offer and the recruiters were really friendly about it so don't feel awkward about making the call. Congrats on doing so well in OCI.

Anyone have a CB at Covington that can tell me how far in advance (or if) they sent you a list of interviewers you would be meeting with? Or at least confirmed the interview in some way? I received the email from my interviewer giving me the number to call and I called it and scheduled the interview, but radio silence since then.

No harm in emailing them to confirm.

I received the list the night before my CB.

Anybody hear anything post-CB from STB in NY? I know they were waiting for all the GULC kids to filter through, but it seems like that should have happened by now. At this point I honestly don't care if I'm dinged, because I don't think I'd take it over some of my other offers, but still it would be nice to know.

I don't think I will. It's not totally out of the running, yet. And I have a hard time believing that anyone with a CB from STB is totally flapping in the wind when it comes to offers. AND, even if someone like that existed, it's really not much more than conjecture that my withdrawal would help them. There are at least two assumptions that aren't that clear in my mind: 1) that I'll actually be getting an offer and 2) that the firm would automatically call up a reserve from Gtwn as a result of my withdrawing. I know TLS/OCS bang home this point of not keeping offers/callbacks open when you aren't serious about them, but in my mind it only becomes a moral issue when you are so sure that you don't like the firm that the firm's time and money are being wasted. As it is, they already had me up to NY, so I'm going to see what they think and make a decision from there.

I'm honestly lost here...someone want to actually explain why it's wrong for me to keep this open? What happens if I close it? Assume for the sake of argument that, unlike my original post indicates, if I got an offer I would at least seriously consider it.

Edit: Because I would seriously consider it. My first post did not actually capture my level of interest in STB.

It is actually MORE likely that STB would give your spot to another GULCer than it would be at most other firms. As you said yourself, they are waiting and looking at all GULCers as a pool before making any decisions. That makes it much more likely that your spot would go to a GULCer than someone else (and unlike you, that GULCer probably wants it).

I mean, I get that, but in my head I just doubt that a law firm of its stature simply sets out to hire X number of GULC students, with the idea being that they are just going to take the X best GULC students they get in. At the margins, at least, I doubt that they are so set on hitting a number that one student withdrawing/not accepting means they bump someone else up. And, if they really are so set on a number, what functional difference does it make if I withdraw, or get the offer and then let them know I won't be accepting?

Of course, like all of TLS, this is just the blind leading the blind, so who knows. I'll think hard about how serious I am about them tonight, and if I decide I really wouldn't accept IF I received an offer, I'll withdraw in the morning. Honestly, I'm just surprised by how people were ready to jump down my throat for waiting to see if they made me an offer. As much solidarity as I really do feel for my classmates, I really was high on STB going in, and worked hard to impress them at the screener and took the callback very seriously. My mind has changed since then, perhaps, but this is a challenging decision to make--so I thought it wasn't morally repugnant to try to understand my options more fully. Certainly all the threads on TLS in ABC v. XYZ vein have not been subject to such attacks.

Make the best decision for you. If you think you could see yourself going there, don't withdraw. If you do get an offer, and you're still not sure, talk to a couple attorneys at each firm that you liked and explain your situation. That's definitely better than being bullied into withdrawing because of an internet forum.

People only responded like they did because your initial post made it seem that you would not consider them if given an offer and just wanted to see if you got in for bragging rights. Now that it's clearer that you would actually consider them, i'm sure no one holds it against you.
