Do OCI for 1Ls exist in this economy?
Do firms come to schools for 1Ls anymore in this economy? Or is it very exclusive?

OCI for 1Ls? You talking about the 2L OCI (summer before second year or fall of second year) or the tiny spring OCI schools have? Some firms come for Spring OCI, but none of the big ones for Summer Associate positions. Most of the better schools have many big firms come to the 2L OCI.

Yes I meant the summer before 2L.random5483 wrote:OCI for 1Ls? You talking about the 2L OCI (summer before second year or fall of second year) or the tiny spring OCI schools have?

I wouldn't count on anything from any spring OCI your school might have. T14s might have more opportunities but at my T25 1l OCI was pretty anemic and only a handful of people got jobs out of it.

T10 above top 10%, got my 1L SA this way. From what I've seen, getting the callback is almost exclusively grade-dependent.Kilpatrick wrote:I wouldn't count on anything from any spring OCI your school might have. At the time of 1L OCI at my T10, I had a 3.9, and did not get interviews with any of the three firms on which I bid.Anonymous User wrote:T10 above top 10%, got my 1L SA this way. 4.0+, 3 short screening interviews and 3 callbacks.. I just figured it was my grades. OP, 1L OCI's still exist, but they are definitely a crapshoot (as evidenced here).Anonymous User wrote:At the time of 1L OCI at my T10, I had a 3.9, and did not get interviews with any of the three firms on which I bid.Anonymous User wrote:T10 above top 10%, got my 1L SA this way. They probably interviewed one person each, and they took you over me. Damn you!Anonymous User wrote:4.0+, 3 short screening interviews and 3 callbacks.. I just figured it was my grades. I've also been led to believe that URMs have a bit more opportunity for 1L SAs.

At the time of 1L OCI at my T10, I had median grades, got 3 firm interviews and 1 callback. Sounds like you're at the wrong T10.Anonymous User wrote:At the time of 1L OCI at my T10, I had a 3.9, and did not get interviews with any of the three firms on which I bid.Anonymous User wrote:T10 above top 10%, got my 1L SA this way. Yes, particularly in 1L "OCI" or more accurately a job search because firms have diversity scholarships that come with a 1L SA position. Any boost in 2L OCI hiring is much more muted and it is not anywhere near the Law School URM Bump.DC1L wrote:URMs get a leg up in OCI too?!

The easiest way to get a 1L SA will be in your home market.

Summer associate. 1l SA at a big firm is pretty difficult to get at any school, but outside of the T14 its basically impossible unless URM. You'll be able to get a legal job your 1l summer pretty easily, just don't count on a big firm and don't count on 1l OCI

Yeah, if you're one of the very few people who lands a 1l SA at a big firm you get paid the same salary as the 2l SAs. Not sure how much you get paid at a smaller firm because I don't know anyone working for a small firm. I know a total of two people with 1l SAs (both through diversity programs) and everyone else I know is unpaid or poorly paid.
ETA: This is at a non-T14 school. YMMV

Re: Do OCI for 1Ls exist in this economy?
T30 here, non-URM
I did 1L OCI, 7 interviews, 2 callbacks and 1 offer at a big firm. Usually a 1L SA get paid less than a 2L SA (though not much less).
My gpa was 3.9, and the firm was in my home market. I think both gpa and home market played a big role.

Do you think any large NYC firms will be at American University's Washington College of Law for 1L OCI?
