Does Resume Collect ever result in anything?

Post by BarbellDreams » Sun Jul 24, 2011 10:09 pm

Was wondering if its worth taking the time to apply to all the resume collects since many of the firms listed are obviously way out of my league (I meet the criteria they require but they are the type of firms that T6 kids get)?

+1. I also wonder why the likes of Skadden even bother to collect resumes from my T60 school... Is it not a waste of everybody's time?

LOL yes. Skadden is also wasting a whole day of some poor associate's time to interview 24 NDLS students at their NY office.

This. Not applying for jobs you want doesn't get you anywhere. It takes 15 mins to edit your form CL.

Caveat: I honestly believe massmailing might get you further than resume dropping for any given firm.

Oh, I happily spent those 15 minutes. By "a waste of everybody's time" I meant skadden's and my CSO's, not mine.

not to make this thread "serious," but is the potential difference in value of resume collects vs. mass mail equalized if you follow up with the recruiting person or someone at the firm? or is there something more valuable about mass mails?

Resume collects aren't usually bundled and sent to the recruiter until early to mid August at the soonest- but I'd imagine they at least get glanced at. Mass mails can go out as early as you're ready- but they're probably 10x more likely to get put in the shred tray on arrival.

Would a firm recruiter find it to be too obnoxious to receive a resume through both the resume collection and mass mailing?

I'm mass mailing firms that are not coming to OCI, as well as the firms doing resume collect at my school. So far, the only response I had from the firms doing resume collect was from one firm telling me to submit my material through the resume collect.

I have been mass mailing numerous V50s who don't come to our OCI, but allow for a resume collect. The worst response I ever got was "please send us your resume in the fall" (and that was only one firm). Other than that, 60% of my replies have been positive and 40% have given no response. No firm has ever implied that they preferred the resume collect system or thought that I was improperly skirting the system by working through mass mailing.

One of my buddies got an interview from GW resume collection. Doesn't hurt to try.

I'm doing it after contacting the firm and scheduling a meeting the with someone in the practice group I am interested in. Not a lock, but it's still way better than mass mailing and bare resume collections.

No, not at all. A lot of people I know got jobs because they actually send a UPS box filled with resumes. 1 resume is easy to ignore, a short stack of 500 or so makes an impression.

Another guy got the job by just applying to every publicly available email address at a firm. It took him a while to put 700 email addresses into the 'to' field, but when the entire firm got his application at once they really took notice. He was getting high fives from people when he came in to do the callback.

The more you apply to one firm, the better. I recommend you send an application twice per day, every day until the firm hires you.

This kind of response in the legal employment forum is quite uncharacteristic of you.

Do you not spend much time on the employment forum? I've been snide and unhelpful here since before it was cool. It's just sprinkled in with efforts at helping.

I got an interview through resume collect, but it wasn't a firm that was out of reach or anything.

Absolutely can't hurt to apply, though.

Sorry to bump such an old thread but this is relevant to my current situation. I attend a T2 but was fortunate enough to land an interview with a V20 that I thought was waaay out of my league. The firm doesn't attend my school's OCI, but it does collect resumes. While I plan on going in there and doing my best, I am curious if anyone one has had success converting and interview from a resume collect into an actual offer. BTW, this is not an attempt to humblebrag, I just don't want to get my hopes up.

I know people that have. Its alot easier to go screener -> cb when you arent competing with 50 classmates at t2 oci

Got 2 screeners out of 10 resume collects so far. If you have the grades to impress resume collects will get you noticed far better than mass mailing.

Last year I got two CBs after screeners from two resume collects (one screener was in person and the other was on the phone). Unfortunately neither CB led to an offer, but I agree that it was better odds than preselect OCI at my school.

Anecdotes from the current cycle:

Resume collect with OMM led to screener led to callback led to offer.
Resume collect with Weil led to screener led to callback which has yet to occur.
Resume collect led to 3 other V100 firms calling for screeners.

I'm at a school in the 20s and I'm fairly well credentialed. I think it's about as effective as direct mailing and a lot less time intensive.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
