Some of them involve dinners or cocktail parties

I apologize for asking a question that no doubt has been answered numerous times. But it seems that people are using mail and email interchangeably in these conversations, and it is confusing the heck out of me: Once and for all, what is the preferred method for mass mailing to law firms? Snail mail, or electronic mail?

Is there a mass mailing faq or tips thread floating around? I have many more questions but I don't want to burden this thread which seems dedicated to strategy and results rather than logistics: for example, to whom should I send my material, when, how to compile a list of target firms (NYC) etc.

Thanks.

Rejected from Patterson Belknap via email. So about a 2 week turnaround there.

Also I have an interview with Willkie on Thursday. It's three 20 minute interviews, no lunch. Does anyone know whether this is for screening, or the final interview before a potential offer?

I'm the poster above. T17, don't rank, but probably top third?

I had one last week except only 2 interviews and they were more like 45 minutes each. Felt like a screening interview to me (had one partner on the list of interviewers, but he was swapped out last minute since he was busy).

How long after snail-mailing is appropriate to follow up by e-mail?

I just had a Willkie interview - 4 interviewers, 2 hiring partners, pretty sure that was my callback, I had met with a partner and associate when I visited in july and guess they treated that like a screening. No lunch though.

Had a screening interview with a large non-Vault firm in my region that I secured via mass mail. Was only 30 min, and I think it went well. Toward the end of the interview, I started talking about a writing assignment I had done over the summer that involved many issues that my interviewer is an expert in. He said he would be happy to take a look at it, as a writing sample. I guess it must have gone halfway well if he is still willing to assess my writing even after the screener.

Getting a little antsy. Had some good luck with OCI but it is all quiet on the mass mail front.

Somehow got a V20 interview request one day after sending in my materials - mailed yesterday, request came today. Looks like the recruiter was kind enough to kick it to attorneys in my desired practice group, which probably made the difference.

Treat this like a callback? Or like a screening interview?

Is there a lunch?

There's only two types of legal interviews you need to prepare for, screeners and meals. Every callback I've had or scheduled in just several screeners in a row, plus a meal.

I'm fairly certain that callbacks later in the day, even ones arranged through the traditional OCI process, often don't involve a meal.

OP here - afternoon interview, told that I'd be meeting with two partners in my target practice (possibly more), instructed to bring a writing sample.

The fact that I'm meeting with partners from my practice area (who, if I got an offer, I'd be working under directly) makes me think that this is a callback-type interview. Other than checking out my table manners/letting current associates make sure I'm not a sociopath, what else would they really be able to get from a second round?

I'm also all quiet on the mass mail front. Maybe I'm just impatient, but my hometown firms aren't responding to me at all and yet I know other people getting interviews. MVP transfer.

Got a request for a callback interview within a few hours of my screener this morning. I had a feeling it went well. Didn't think they would be this fast getting back to me. Large, non-Vault, market-paying firm btw.

lol at "T17." Just say "Vanderbilt," or if you want to be more mysterious, call it a T30.

But hey, what do I know? I only go to a T56.

Isn't Texas 14th? Now I'm confused. I guess saying T17 was an effective technique for remaining mysterious!

I'm up to a 40 percent response rate to my mass mail campaign, which 90 percent of was sent via physical USPS mailings(I'm old school like that)

I started sending things out July 7th or so. Sent out my last batch, via email this past Friday.

So far I have some interviews scheduled in my home market(more interviews than i got at OCI), and have received a lot of "we'll get back to you in August/After OCI" and a lot of "We want writing samples and transcripts."

But I've also got a ton of mailed rejections, way more than emailed rejections.

My thoughts:

My home market has been highly receptive
NYC seems to hate me, is swamped, or never got my materials
Markets where I have no ties are basically GTFO
Markets with weak ties have responded in a lukewarm fashion(maybe after OCI, Please try to go a job fair we attend, provide more materials, etc)

I also have received USPS rejections, even though I sent an email to begin with.

It's not T14 in that it has never been in the top ten like the other T14. However, it's #14 this year and poster should stop pretending he isn't at Vandy.
