AUSA

Any advice for a district court clerk (T14, top 1/3, LR) who wants to be an AUSA? I'd like to work for one of the NYC USAOs, but my clerkship isn't in New York. I've been told to apply to NYC biglaw firms with former AUSAs. Any thoughts on what specific firms I should target? What kind of work should I be doing there? How many years of experience until I can be competitive for a position? Would I have a better shot if I worked as an assistant D.A.?

Thanks in advance.

ITT: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 3&t=150563 there is a link to a guide to becoming an AUSA from Harvard, I think, that might be helpful. :)

I think harvard has a great article about this online somewhere, look around or maybe somebody has a link?

Otherwise I believe most nyc AUSAs come from the top firms in NYC (chambers bands 1 ans 2 for lit in NYC would be a good place to start to look). Not sure how political it is or how many years of experience it takes, but I know it's not easy.

...or yeah, I guess I could just post it:

Ah, that lovely feeling where you have answered the OP in a few posts and await a swarm of disagreement, bickering, name calling, abuse of the anon feature, and gnashing of teeth.

Make sure to apply for DOJ Honors. AUSA jobs almost never happen straight out of law school, but now and then it does. DOJ Honors will greatly increase your chances.

Not to derail the thread, but how many Honor hires are there a year?

Not a lot, I believe the DOJ website breaks it down by state and school.

Not many, but it depends on where you apply. Not all Do$ honors jobs are in DC or hunt-down-the-bad-guys-for-commisar-Obama type gigs, but that's what most people are thinking of when they ask.

DOJ's website is a clusterfuck of HTML nothingness, but...:

They break it down by school, but not by number of hires. Hmm.
