AUSA

Any advice for a district court clerk (T14, top 1/3, LR) who wants to be an AUSA? I'd like to work for one of the NYC USAOs, but my clerkship isn't in New York. I've been told to apply to NYC biglaw firms with former AUSAs. Any thoughts on what specific firms I should target? What kind of work should I be doing there? How many years of experience until I can be competitive for a position? Would I have a better shot if I worked as an assistant D.A.?

I think harvard has a great article about this online somewhere, look around or maybe somebody has a link?
Otherwise I believe most nyc AUSAs come from the top firms in NYC (chambers bands 1 ans 2 for lit in NYC would be a good place to start to look). Not sure how political it is or how many years of experience it takes, but I know it's not easy.

Make sure to apply for DOJ Honors. AUSA jobs almost never happen straight out of law school, but now and then it does. DOJ Honors will greatly increase your chances.

Not many, but it depends on where you apply. Not all Do$ honors jobs are in DC or hunt-down-the-bad-guys-for-commisar-Obama type gigs, but that's what most people are thinking of when they ask.
