ask contact for info interview or just ask for job?

I met a partner at a firm that I would love to work for at a cle that I coordinated. We talked throughout the day and seemed to hit it off pretty good. I am begining my mass mailing now and was wondering which would be best.
1. send resume with cover letter addressed to him asking for a position....or
2. send him an email asking to meet for an informaitonal interview.
The only problem I have with the info interview is that he is in the family law section of the firm and I absolutely do not want to work in that field. I am more interested in their business dept. On the other hand is it too forward to come right out and ask for a job?
any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ask for an informational interview. Then send an application to the recruiting coordinator (if they have one) or the hiring partner and mention your contact in the cover letter.

Before wrapping up the convo you have when meeting him, ask if there is anything you should be doing to help you stand out. if the guy likes you, he will usually offer at least to pass your name along to people or ask for a resume to send along. Sometimes they will even get you an interview on the spot. Definitely don't push hard for the get me and interview, be likable and talk intelligently, but at the end make sure the guy knows that you want to work at his firm and you would like to interview

Op here. Thanks for the responses. Any thoughts on how to approach him for the info int. I would have no problem if I were interested in his field, but as I said I have no interest. Should I send an email asking to meet and discuss the general legal community in the area and best ways to become a good lawyer, etc...?

Email him and say that you are interested in working for his firm and that you would love to speak with him when he is free about career opp. there. Leave practice areas out of it. In my experience they will ask you what you want to do and when that happens be honest and maybe he'll give you contact info for other attorneys in his firm that do that type of work. Worst case, just say that his type of work is something that you've thought about but that you aren't really sure what you want to do yet.
