Well, maybe. It depends on the watch and the person wearing it. But as a general rule, the douchers tend to go for something much flashier to show that they have money. An Audemars Piaget doesn't exactly scream money like a diamond-encrusted Rolex does.

You're absolutely correct. Rolex, for example, is not a watchmaker anyone with sense would buy from.

Serious answer -

I wouldn't wear it. As someone who has interviewed other people, and been interviewed many times, one thing I do notice is what watch people are wearing. I do form impressions based on that. Kind of like seeing what cars are in the parking lot of the company you interview at.

An expensive watch is the surest, yet subtle way of showing off.

Yes, the age and experience matter. If you could have made that money for yourself and afforded the watch, go ahead and wear anything.
Otherwise, don't wear the premium brands. Anything under $500 is probably ok.

A boss who has always wanted a Rolex but could not afford one will feel bad hiring a 20-yr old with a Rolex on.

This isn't OCI (read the OP) and the guy's not 20 years old. I wouldn't pay 15k for that watch but if you would more power to you. I don't see an issue with wearing it.

Relevant question: if I want to buy a new, nice-but-not-too-nice watch, how do we feel about Omega v. Tag Heuer?

I'm just saying it's not like "Who the hell cares?" People do care, will notice it, and judge you for it. If you're ok with that, then wear it by all means. If you bought it for yourself, then there really is no issue.

I love my TAG. It's super comfortable, and looks nice as either a daily watch or when I am dressed up.

They don't make my exact model anymore, but they still make them simple and in stainless steel. I think mine retailed around $1200.

Omega is a nice watch, too, but I just found the fit and feel of the TAG to be nicer.

Very juvenile viewpoint. Checking time on a cellphone is incredibly unprofessional/rude to those around you. Every man should wear a watch to work.

do you all seriously need to check the time that often? i could tell you what time it is within about 15 minutes any time, just from internal clock, and that's if i haven't seen the time in a while (on a billboard, bank sign, computer, whatever). you should only need to check your watch or cell phone occasionally, to recalibrate.
