OCS wants special requests to be targeted, not mass mailing through OGI, so they reserve the right to cut you off. I received my 2L job through a special request to a firm that selected me as an alternate. The value of the special request is that the interviewer reviews it, not the firm's legal recruiter. Thus, if it is accepted, you know right away that the interviewer likes you because he handpicked you. My advice re: special requests:

1. Special request alternates when possible (because the firm just told you that it thinks you're qualified), especially alternates in your home markets.
2. If the firm is sending an interviewer with pull at the firm--such as the chair of the department--the special request would be more likely to turn into a job, assuming you get that person in your corner at OGI.
3. Take time to think about what makes the market and the firm special and attractive to you. Reproducing your cover letter won't cut it.

Also, my 3L OGI experience is off to a so-so start, in case anyone is interested.

Sorry to throw water on the fire. I'm straight through from UG, my entire bid list is posted on page ~16 or so (#1 bid is Cleary, about 58 bids total, if you want more info).

Anyway, no WE, 3.59:

20 Pre-selects and 7 alternates. I feel pretty good about that. You may now ignore me and continue panicking.

P.S. - I have 1 more PS and 1 more alternate than I did at noon so stuff is for sure "fluid" as Donovan described. The PS is Debevoise so if they no-selected you this morning stuff moved this afternoon.

Wow, you have the EXACT same profile as me, almost all that info matches mine exactly.

17 preselects, 9 alternates. Still waiting on 4 or so. Can I ask what firms preselected you?

Wow, another insanely close match.

3.59 here. NY corporate though not litigation. 20/9 waiting on 2 more. Seems like 3.59's fared well for the most part in NY.

So as of now, it seems like top 1/5 is the big cut-off, but top 1/4 is not going to get what we expected until things trickle down.

Other than the poster who got 3 preselects, how many top quarter people have we heard from? I feel like that case was so shocking that it colored my perception of the entire category.

Yeah, I really don't think it's as bad as people originally feared. Looking at it people ended up having good results. This is all pre-lottery also.

With everyone posting anonymously, you can't even be sure how many people are posting.

Top 1/4 with 3 preselects anon here. I did bid all NYC. I also have received 10 alternates so far, with 4 firms left to report.

I didn't bid any secondary, b/c i have a 1L SA in my home market so that is probably skewing my overall preselect results. I also went straight through.

I'm not happy with what happened, but it looks like when the alternates and lottery comes down I should have 10+.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

NB: its weird because the 3 firms that selected me are all V20 very highly thought of firms.

Maybe you got yield protected by the lower firms.

With the max of 20 you can keep, I can easily see how interviews would cascade down, though. So I've got 17 preselects and 9 alternates. If the people above me with high 20s, 30 decline a few of my alternates, i'd take them which would then free up some of my preselects which I would end up declining, and so on.

That leads me to believe that the top 1/3 should at least pick up some more. I'm not sure about median, but there's the lottery as well.

It's easy to forget that the lottery isn't just interviews with firms that decided they didn't want you -- a whole bunch of NYC firms only had 20 interview slots, meaning they could only pick 13 or so preselects. Surely they'd be happy with more people than that, so it's not as if they looked at a resume and decided "Eh, we don't want this person." Rather, it could just as easily have been "Eh, this person with a 3.45 is good, we'd love to interview them, but let's go ahead and just give our 13 preselects to 3.6+."

Are alternates all ranked in one big pool or is it more "alternate 1, alternate 2, etc."

Also curious as to how alternates get converted...is it just a mystery in the black box of symplicity?

Apparently Latham preselects are in and are just waiting to be processed and uploaded; that might happen at some point tonight, I was told.

Haha. I'm working my 1L job through the first week and a half of August. But you come during the school year and it's a deal.

Sure thing. I'm here 'til after Labor Day, that's after school starts for y'all, right?

I miss me some Christian's Pizza anyway. It's not that it's great, it's just that I can't get pizza like that anywhere else.
