Completely serious. I Wikied them and saw stuff about '09 layoffs, but if you guys are talking about them in terms of partners being terrible people, I assume it must be worse than that.

tl;dr: The law firm model tends to not include mass layoffs. Several firms had to resort to them during the crisis, but many viewed Latham's conduct as particularly egregious. They laid off a number of first years (who had been at the firm for just a handful of months) which is both uncommon and very difficult to recover from as an associate. They also had similar things happen about a decade ago and promised it wouldn't happen again, and promised in the early stages of the crisis that it wouldn't happen.

On the one hand, it's a business, and you can't really begrudge them for cutting costs as incoming business dropped majorly. On the other hand, there are plenty of firms who either didn't have that level of financial trouble or did but conducted themselves in a manner that caused less damage to the people they'd hired.

As others have said, there's a lot more detail in the other thread.

Not sure what the TLS rules are, but can you just call out a yellow puppet/muppet to make an appearance? Not sure if it/he responds to such a call. I think you need to just let it happen freely, Mr. Doritos.

Go in there ready to set yourself apart. The usual safe questions will never hurt you ("What are the first two years as an associate like?") but they're not going to set you apart and get you an offer. OCI is you trying to get people to REMEMBER YOU. You'll have the suit, grades and credentials of most other people. Be ready to have a conversation that makes the person remember you, and that conversation isn't going to be the natural consequence of you pulling a list of questions from the internet and reciting them. You do that and your interviewer will go to the list of answers recited a thousand times and then, unless your credentials are objectively the best, you better hope that everyone was as uninteresting as you were.

tl;dr Unless you've survived a civil war, be ready to have a good substantive conversation about a legal topic (1) that you know well (2) that your interviewer will care about (3) and that you can reliably steer an interviewer towards. If you know details about the firm that will make for a good conversation, that works too, but don't think that demonstrating that you looked at the front page of their site is going to get you anywhere.

Doritios - that seems allowable. I withdraw my objection.

Is there anyway I can find out how many rooms each firm is doing?

OCS sent out a document a few weeks ago about the # of rooms that each firm is doing. A simple excel sheet would have done the trick, but it's a big PDF.

That PDF doesn't have the number of rooms for a vast number of firms.

References question. If someone agreed to be a reference for you during the 1L job search back in the winter should I contact them again and ask for permission to use them for OGI? I don't want to look stupid if its understood that it's fine. I know a few firms ask for recs.

How selective is Dechert NY? Out of reach for top 25%?

Not very selective, and not at all out of reach. You'll be in play for substantially more selective firms (though obviously nothing is certain).

Asking is always better. Happy 4th btw.

Does bidding order, for lottery purposes, really matter after the first 10ish bids?

Does Allen, Allen, Allen, & Allen require a cover letter? My last name isn't Allen, FWIW.

Are they doing OGI this year? Can't tell if that's a legit question or not, since it's a legit firm and has an office like 2 miles from the school.

Pretty sure he is kidding and no they are not doing OGI. They have practice areas called "dog bites" and "drunk driving accidents". Pretty sure they don't recruit new law students much

I'm all about making fun of things, but the firm has 2 dozen or so attorneys, and 4/5 of the currently employed Allens went to UVA law. They also appear to make skads of money. It's not the traditional route, but I'd hesitate at least a little before throwing them under the LOLtrain.

Any firm with an office that close to a Chick-Fil-A is safe from my LOLtrain

Yea, some of their areas are less legit than others, but if you want to practice high-end (for VA) plaintiff's law in VA, they're about as good as it gets. And a lot of them make bank.
