There will be about 7 lottery slots for them, so I'd imagine you would have a decent chance at them. They don't strike me as the type of firm a lot of people would have in their top 5, but you never know.

Same. 3.54. I think that concludes my MIA bid portion of the experience. Onwards to alternates, lotteries, and other things which are probably all equally anxiety inducing. Good times, good times.

Ditto. Let's hope some VLR people focusing on DC give us a chance.

That finishes the preselect portion of OGI for me.

All NYC with around Top 1/4 grades.

5 Preselects, 9 alternates.

Based off my experience last year, preselects+half of alternates+4 to 6 lottery interviews will be a reasonable estimate of your final count.

Was this directed at me (3.48 5 pre/ 9 alt person) or more general?

Does this factor in the lower interview cap?

I meant it it generally. No, it doesn't factor in the cap. I expect that because of the cap, if most of your alternates are in NYC, DC, and CA, then you have a better chance at converting your alts into interviews as they trickle down.

IIRC, last year, about 2/3 of my alts converted (which was probably high) and I received 5 or 6 lottery interviews (about average).

Edit: also, only 20% seats were reserved for the lottery last year. Isn't it 30 this year? Lottery interviews should actually be a little more.

Cavalier wrote:The 20 interview cap is certainly restrictive if you're fortunate enough to have more options, but I think it's for the best. Getting as many students as possible summer associate positions should be UVA's priority; ensuring that those at the top have the ability to choose between offers at several top firms is less important. The consequences of striking out at OGI are vastly more severe than the consequences of not landing an offer the best possible firm, and the latter is much more easy to remedy (through 3L OGI after receiving an offer, and post-clerkship hiring) than the former. So even if the interview cap only results in five or ten more students receiving summer associate positions, I think it's undoubtedly justified.

Remember that UVA is the only top school to use preselects at all. So even though the interview cap hurts the most successful students, UVA already provides more advantages to those students than the other top schools.

Any word from Maynard & Cooper (Birmingham), Smith Moore (Greensboro), or Baker Donelson (Atlanta)?

Done with preselects.

3.5, 30 preselects, 10 alternates, focused on NYC/DC. Results not typical.

3.5 with solid work experience.

Focused on NYC and westcoast. Proabably about 30 bids in NYC. 7 pre-select. 6 from WestCoast, 1 from NYC.

14 alternates (12 from NYC).

Let the trickle-down begin.

Did you target especially competitive firms or does your work experience scream "not NYC big law?!"

Spread firms between reaches, targets, and safeties. Other than west coast ties, nothing screams that I couldn't handle NYC.

Does not surprise me. Between people I've talked to NYC was a massacre for those in that range. Personally I was 4 for 50.

I know one slightly below median friend that was 0/38.

Top 10%, finished with 13 DC preselects, 2 secondary preselects, and 14 DC alternates. Lack of work experience hurt I think and DC is tough. Roll on down alternates . . .

GPA is 3.54 (~top 20%), straight from UG.

15 PS (13 NY, 1 DC, 1 secondary)
12 alts (8 NY, 3 DC, 1 secondary)

Bid 40 NYC, 7 DC, and 3 secondary. Still waiting on 4 NY, 2 DC, 1 secondary.

Updated with final totals:

18 PS (13 NY, 3 DC, 2 secondary)
14 alts (9 NY, 4 DC, 1 secondary)

Had much better luck with the highly selective firms in NY than the less selective ones
