I emailed OCP and they were extremely unhelpful. They said:
The number of interview slots varies from employer to employer. There isn't necessarily a correlation between the number of offices for which an employer is interviewing and the number of slots available. My advice is to rank the employers who you are most interested in higher than the employers that interest you less.
This is a very simple question and not something that should be difficult for OCP to find out. If Ropes & Gray with their 6 offices (or Jones Day with their 15 offices) has the same number of interview slots as Paul Weiss with their one office, that would be useful to know.
I asked them the same thing. They responded that if they gave that out, "everyone" would bid with the same thing in mind and it would be unhelpful in the end. Not a fan, because that number combined with the GPA list would make my bidding a whole lot easier.

Other schools do this and don't have a problem.

Also this:
The number of interview slots varies from employer to employer. My advice is to rank the employers who you are most interested in higher than the employers that interest you less.
may have been the most hilarious non-answer answer that I have seen from any OCS for a while.

Just like telling us the GPA numbers from the last two years would be unhelpful in the end, huh? Don't want the students to know information that might help them maximize interviews/callbacks/job prospects!

Some more market intel from another V5 NYC summer associate:

1) hiring will pick up significantly for 2011 OCI compared to 2010. At my firm, people are expecting a return to about 2003/2004 levels, or about 70-80% of the 2006-2007 highs in terms of SA class size.

2) corporate attorneys appear to be in more demand than litigation attorneys, but this may be anecdotal to my firm.

3) due to stronger demand, I would not be so suspicious of the grade numbers put out by OCS. Things ARE getting better, so the old numbers may not be all that inaccurate any more. Also, consider that the grade info is really only good for gauging *selectivity* - some firms absolutely will not go below a certain number (see, e.g., S&C) while others will depending on other criteria. Grades matter but they are not dispositive.

Good luck.

What are some NY firms that aren't coming to OCI that would be good to mail for someone with top credentials interested in litigation? So far I have: Wachtell, Cahill, Boies, and Covington NY. Others?

Also, is it okay to use email for submission?

Wachtell is all corporate.

Thanks. I'm gonna talk bankruptcy in the cover letter. I have a finance background so I'm okay with corporate, but I'm pushing for litigation.

Edit: Just for posterity, Wachtell is not all corporate. They have 27 corporate partners and 27 litigation partners according to http://nalpdirectory.com/. Chambers & Partners ranks them in "Elite Band 1" for New York litigation. Obviously, they're known for their M&A work, but it would seem they're also a top litigation house.

So I'm officially terrified about my all-NYC bidlist after watching the shitshow in the UVA thread. Unfortunately, my tertiary home market isn't coming to OCI and I have zero ties anywhere else.

I know it's all lottery at Michigan, but I'm officially scared that everyone at every T10 just bid on NYC and nowhere else....

Jesus Christ, same here. I'm from NY but wondering if I should make some last-minute changes.

Mostly NY as well, but I don't think its worth a drastic change in your list. I'm sure most people bid NY, but at least with the lottery you should get at least 10 (worst case scenario). If you look through the UVA thread, it is brutal, but with preselect, you do have people like that top 5% LR guy taking 30 pre-selects away from everyone else.

So the OCI procedure document says something about being able to view your final interview schedule on August 17, but does anyone know if whether we find out about bidding results (i.e. list of firms but not the finalized time/day etc) before then?

<---Freaking out a bit. I bid 2/3 NYC and 1/3 CHI. Targeted mailings to my home market. Even if I wanted to change my bid list, I don't know if it would improve my odds at landing interviews. Anyone thinking of throwing some DC bids instead of NYC? I know the mantra is to bid on no more than 2 markets, but, seems like NYC is not the holy grail it was hyped to be.

Curious about this too. Would like to know what firms I have interviews with before August 17th.

Yeah, it would help to know that earlier. From the advice given, having 5 days to e-mail a busy recruiting coordinator asking them to add you to their schedule because you didn't get an interview seems like a short amount of time.

Summary of what happened in the UVA thread please? Overbidding on NY resulted in low interview rate?

From what I can tell: small sample size of people posting pre-select results before all results were in, leading to unnecessary, premature panic.

When do we find out who we are interviewing with? One person told me Aug 17th, but Symplicity seems to indicate Aug 15th.

I dunno, they might just tell you that letting people know whom they're interviewing with beforehand would be "unhelpful in the end"

This actually is pretty damn annoying. Can't symplicity spit out the schedule in like a second? It would be nice not to waste time researching firms we're not actually going to be interviewing with.

It'll probably take a a few hours, maybe even a day to make sure everything is set. But there is no way in hell that it will take almost 3 weeks.

It's not so much that I don't want to waste time researching firms I won't be interviewing with. It's that I would like to set up interviews with firms who I don't get slotted with, especially here in my home market.

Three weeks is ridic.

I think they'll come out pretty soon. Anybody know from last year?

I asked in the discuss you law school thread, and a 3L said we find out what firms we got the same time we get our schedule.
