Information on Grade Selectivity?

Postby Anonymous User » Tue Jun 07, 2011 12:56 pm

Wondering what resources you TLSers use to determine how "grade selective" firms are. I know what they say they want based on their OCI profiles, but what are you all basing your "grade selectivity" criterion off of?

Career services should have a list of historical GPA data for firms that have hired grads from your school.

Anecdotes paint a broad sketch, but many people on TLS have access to documents from at least their own school, and often several others, listing information about the GPA ranges of students who received offers and callbacks. These tend to be compiled by top schools with large OCI programs to help students bid, but are kept under strict control by career services offices. The purpose is to avoid alienating firms, who do not want information about GPA ranges published, and to protect students, because more information would likely increase the extent to which firms relied on GPA alone as a hiring metric. There are stories of firms hearing that other firms are more grade conscious than they are and bumping their minimum GPA requirement, which is likely to hurt a school's overall placement (though not by much for an individual firm of course).

As an example, I'm looking at a chart right now suggesting the median GPA of students from a certain law school who received an offer at Sullivan & Cromwell NYC is ~0.2 higher than those who received an offer from Skadden NYC. You'll see information to this effect all over TLS threads about bidding on NYC, but as you can see that conventional wisdom is actually born of more than just anecdote and rumor.

Any tips on how to obtain those sacred records from career services?

Think there's any chance that simply asking would help?
