Depends on city and firm. The massive ones you talk about are only available at very few high end firms (think Wachtell). New York tends to get the biggest bonuses, with DC either matching or being a close second. Most of the top firms gave both end of year and spring bonuses this year, but MANY didn't give one or either.

Cravath set the market for both end of year 2010 bonuses and spring 2011 bonuses.

Cravath 2010 year end bonuses:

Class of 2009 – $7,500
Class of 2008 — $10,000
Class of 2007 — $15,000
Class of 2006 — $20,000
Class of 2005 — $25,000
Class of 2004 — $30,000
Class of 2003 — $35,000

Cravath 2011 spring bonuses:

Class of 2010: $2,500
Class of 2009: $7,500
Class of 2008: $10,000
Class of 2007: $15,000
Class of 2006: $20,000
Class of 2005: $20,000
Class of 2004: $20,000

$7,500.

Standard first year associate bonuses were once about $40,000.

LOL.

So sad, but so true. If you creep around on greedyassociates, you'll see ppl complaining about like 30k bonuses when market first-year bonuses were like 40k. Oh well, biglaw w/ comparatively mediocre bonuses >>>>> no jerb/jerb insufficient to service LS debt.

That is just so painful though...
Salaries were only $125,000 back then, so overall compensation was about the same. But then factor in inflation...

No, 160 and 30K+ first year bonuses definitely coincided. I remember when Simpson bumped to 160, and people were thinking of first year salaries as ball-park $200,000 due to the bonus levels.

No bonuses for these jobs.
