Terrified About Jobs

Postby Fred_McGriff » Wed May 18, 2011 3:00 pm

Went to a bar last night with a bunch of recent (graduated last week) Tulane Law grads. One girl's estimate was that 50 out of a class of 250 had legit full time paying jobs lined up. Shocked me completely, especially if it's true considering the school is a pretty good school in its region. They said there was next to no hiring in District Attorney's offices across the state. In regards to Tulane specifically and the lower T1 in general, has anyone else heard numbers this bad?

50 out of 250 at a good regional school like Tulane is a bit of a exaggeration in my estimation. Regardless, that employment prospects, even within the top schools, are bad is no news here.

It kind of felt that way, if you had told me there were 50 kids without jobs, I wouldn't have batted an eye, but having someone tell me deadpan that 80% of the class is shit out of luck, she's moving back to her parents basement, etc. was kind of nuts.

Anyone here with insight into Louisiana?

As someone who goes to Tulane, this is decidedly false and likely just some drunk unemployed kid saying shit. I know that at the time of this document(end of Match) about 100 tulane 2011 graduates had reported full-time employment. Many more will have found jobs since then. And Tulane doesn't really push surveys very hard. So are things difficult out there? Yeah. Are they more difficult for Tulane students? I don't think so.

That's really good to hear, and it looks like a lot of good firms are on there.

While I agree that we likely have a significant under-reporting problem at Tulane, I would like to point out that it does look like the class of 2011 had it particularly bad (this happened everywhere).

"As of May 9, 2011, students have reported summer or permanent employment to the CDO in the following numbers:
1Ls: 173
2Ls: 171
3Ls: 76, plus 12 planning to enroll in full-time degree programs"

Source: CDO email

Take the CDO stats with a grain of salt. I know a lot of people who haven't reported their jobs to the CDO - myself included.

I haven't reported because I have an interview on Tuesday for a job I want WWWWAAAAAYYYYY more than the one I have now, and if I reported my current job to the CDO and then (hopefully) the other one later, the CDO would give me one of those you-shouldn't-change-your-mind talks (something I don't want to deal with).

My point is that people don't seem to really report here, and if you don't take that into account, you will think Tulane isn't doing as well as its peers (which it is).

It's not meant to protect "personal preference". There are rules for its use, which you obviously did not read. Also, you're obviously a 0L posting in the Students forums.

Tempban for blatant abuse of anon feature. Thread lock. Problem solved.
