Why do people favor NYC firms?
I am not a US citizen, so maybe it's something cultural I dont understand, but why do most people favor NYC biglaw over other firms in lower-cost cities that also pay 160k?
thanks!
thanks!

Re: Why do people favor NYC firms?
(1) NYC is where the action is
(2) NYC is where the jobs are
(3) Other cities don't pay $160k (well other cities do, but they aren't much lower CoL than NYC)
Really, (2) is the main reason- NYC firms have the biggest summer classes, require no ties, and have the highest offer rates

Re: Why do people favor NYC firms?
I feel like this is an LSAT question...
The answer? They don't, it just seems like that because it is the largest market.
The amount of people that seem to 'favor' other markets over NYC is probably directly proportional to the size of those markets in comparison to NYC.

Agreed. NYC hires more total than any other market, and they're far less picky about whether you have existing geographic ties. In all, it's easier to get a high-pay, high-profile job there than anywhere else.2LLLL wrote:(1) NYC is where the action is

(2) is big, but (1) shouldn't be underestimated either. One of my good friends has really, really good grades, and is from LA, and went to school in DC. He got offers all three places and took NYC because, he says, "you can always take the New York show on the road, but you can't really come here from someplace else."vanwinkle wrote:Agreed. I got crushed at DC biglaw in OCI. I feel like I could have been born inside the lincoln memorial and I wouldn't have enough "ties." Also they said I was a stupid, ugly, asshole. Is that common at callbacks?2LLLL wrote:I was an NYC hater until I tried my hand at DC BigLaw during 2010 OCI.... Never have I been through a more humbling experience....

Yeah, I feel like if you're into corporate/transactional practice (which I'm not so feel free to correct me) it's almost NYC or bust to get real work...Renzo wrote:(2) is big, but (1) shouldn't be underestimated either. But yes, the food is amazing and there are regular crazies every few blocks so that keeps things fresh.

You gotta come out to Brooklyn. The rent's still absurd, but you can have a little yard.PKSebben wrote:I can't take the tourists and working in midtown and the rent. rent is just absurd.mths wrote:

What does the fact that a market already exists have to do with "job creation"?jdhopeful14 wrote:

Stop equivocating as to the word "market".
