Re: What kind of questions come up during OCI?
1) Abuse of anon.Anonymous User wrote:0L here, starting this Sept.
Ever since my admission I've been reading through
some of the threads in this forum and noticed that
work experience seems to be pretty important these days,
especially for OCI.
The problem for me is that I have a bunch of internships (three) but no real work experience.
So I was wondering what one talks about during OCI
if you don't have much to say regarding work experience.
Is there somewhere in this forum where you can see a list
of questions that employers usually ask?
Do the questions consist mainly of "fit questions"?
Some insight would help!
Thanks!
2) 0L's don't belong in the legal employment forum.
You'll talk about your 1L summer work.

What do you talk about when you interview for your 1L summer work?

Re: What kind of questions come up during OCI?
Understand that most of the interviewers aren't trained interviewers like you might be used to at other jobs (especially large corporations). While a minority of firms will send the hiring partner to OCI, most just send whoever is available at the time. Therefore, the questions run the gambit. Some interviewers just want to talk about baseball, others will ask tough questions.
All you can do to prepare is get to know the firm and try to be as likable as possible without coming off as over-enthusiastic or desperate (or of course, under-enthusiastic).

It's pretty standard stuff, and a good introduction to whoring and demeaning yourself. Watch any audition-themed porn and you'll get an idea of how it goes.Anonymous User wrote:Bump, can anyone else give more insight on what kind of things are talked about during 1L summer interviews?

Q1. Why are you interested in our firm?
Q2. Would you be willing to work here for free?

Re: What kind of questions come up during OCI?
This is just for 1l firm interviews, can't speak to OCI.
At my 20 minute screeners, we talked about college football for about 18 of those minutes with probably 80 percent of my interviewers. The remaining 2 minutes they talked about themselves in response to questions.
At my 30 minute callbacks, we talked about college football for 25 of those 30 minutes. The remaining 5 minutes they talked about themselves in response to questions.
Can't speak to where you're from, but if you are trying to work in Houston or Dallas don't worry about the wall street journal, just worry about everything that happened in the offseason for UT football.

LOL, really? Your questions have not only been asked and answered on TLS, but also on teh internetz. Google is a GREAT place to start, should one be looking for potential legal interview questions.Anonymous User wrote: I've been reading through some of the threads in this forum
As a more general matter, these threads never cease to amaze me. To be sure, at this time the next generation of TLSers, rife with questions, is preparing to shift and replace the previous 1L/2L classes. Yet, we're all (purportedly) going into a profession that hinges in part upon one's ability to do research and come up with answers to both asked and unasked questions.
OP, I want to see you succeed, so flex dem resurching skillz.

Re: What kind of questions come up during OCI?
Out of countless screening interviews I did, every single one asked about my summer employment and what kind of work I did for my employers. Basically a little idle chit chat about whatever I had down as interest on the resume, then every single one left abotu 5-10 minutes for "what can I tell you about my firm", which is basically where you show you did your research on the firm. Most also asked why I wanted to work in the city their office was in.
As far as I can tell from personal experience + collective wisdom of my classmates and TLS, the screeners are basically to determine if you're a normal person or not. The overwhelming majority of people will simply be normal interviews, for whom resume + grades will determine whether there is a callback. A few people will be some exceptional combination of outgoing, charming, good looking, + whatever else makes for a "great" interview, and will get callbacks that they maybe shouldn't based on objective factors. Then you have a people people who are total spazzes, or obese, or tell a racist joke, or some other unlikely thing to get them auto dinged because the interviewer really doesn't like them.

Please learn how to read -- preferably the large tan banner at the top of the page.
If you're a 0L, there's no sensitive employment-related information. hth.Anonymous posting is only appropriate when you are revealing sensitive employment related information about a firm, job, clerkship, etc. You may anonymously respond on topic to these threads. Unacceptable uses include: harassing another user, joking around, testing the feature, or other things that are more appropriate in the lounge.
Failure to follow these rules will get you outed, warned, or banned.
OP: You shouldn't be worrying about this stuff now. It's borderline nutty. You're doing OCI when? Fall 2012?

I'm worried because I'm not currently working and the fact that I will be starting law school without any significant work experience makes me wonder what kind of things I would need to talk about during interviews for 1L summer jobs.OP: You shouldn't be worrying about this stuff now. Re: What kind of questions come up during OCI?
Yes, and roughly the majority of law students are in the same position you are. Legal jobs aren't a mysterious entity. Through 1L and 2L hiring, I was asked basically the same questions that I was asked in any other job interview for any other type of position. The only difference was that they did occasionally ask what my favorite law school class was.Anonymous User wrote:I'm worried because I'm not currently working and the fact that I will be starting law school without any significant work experience makes me wonder what kind of things I would need to talk about during interviews for 1L summer jobs.OP: You shouldn't be worrying about this stuff now. Even still, you have almost a year until you need to think about that stuff. Try to enjoy your last days of freedom.

Re: What kind of questions come up during OCI?
The rule is that the anon feature is for sensitive legal employment information. If you're not a law student and you're not a law grad, then it's highly unlikely that you actually possess any sensitive information. As was noted above, the rule is posted in the large orange (or tan, or whatever you call it) banner at the top of the screen in the Legal Employment forum.theanswer wrote:there is no rule against non law students posting anonymously. what are you talking about?vanwinkle wrote:None of this needed to be anon. 0Ls should not be using the anon feature without very good reason.roranoa wrote:0L here, starting this Sept.
Also, there is a rule against debating use of the anon feature in these threads. Please see http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 3&t=130748 and follow it.
Discussion of the anon feature should stop. Any misuse of it should also stop. Violators may be banned. Thank you for your cooperation.

Re: What kind of questions come up during OCI?
Even though it is quite simple to research typical interview questions, I'll just list some topics and questions that came up frequently during on campus interviews (in no particular order):
- So tell me about [1L summer internship]. There was often substantial discussion of this, including "how did you get that internship?"
- What's your Note Topic? Why did you pick X Journal?
- Why this firm? [always came up, except in callbacks]
- How did you end up at X lawchool from Y State? [Basically, why did you go to law school in this city, and why should we think you are planning on staying in this city?] They seemed to want to know if I was going to stay in this city or if I would rather move somewhere else.
- Why did you go to law school? Why did you go to this particular law school?
These are just a few.
