Let me worry about becoming an associate first brah, one step at a time.Ignatius Reilly wrote:However it is important for partner....you gotta make it rainVeyron wrote:I just ask the biglaw attorneys about their practice when at receptions. Far more interesting than bullshitting about football. I can tell that they are relieved as well not to have to try to make biglaw sound "relaxed" and "lifestyle oriented."
This is also a good idea because the only way that receptions actually help you get jobs is by yielding information that can lead to better interviewing. Its not like the partner is going to be like "oh Veyron was a cool guy when I met him a year ago, better give him zee job."

Re: Best Hobbies for Big Law
I'm going to give you my serious answer:
Hiring partners who I met with during my interviews over break (five) had a range of hobbies. One hiring partner (at the firm I ended up accepted an offer from) really enjoyed skiing. Luckily I had just gotten back from a ski trip 2 days before my interview with that firm, and he and I spent a good deal of time talking about it.
Another hiring partner was a really avid hunter . . . as in he owns land in Africa where he hunts, or something like that. I have absolutely no hunting experience so I wasn't able to connect with that.
Yet another hiring partner at another firm really enjoyed karaoke (random). I'm a huge karaoke guy so I brought it up and he laughed about it.
I forgot what the other hobbies were . . . but they weren't really unique. I found out about these hobbies through lunch with associates.
Moral of the story, IMO, is that attorneys are like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're gonna get.

Re: Best Hobbies for Big Law
Not true at all. I am in biglaw (in NYC no less), and I do find time for my hobbies. I may have to do them at odd hours, but I still find a way to fit them in. People who do nothing but work will burn out and/or go insane. Being too one-dimensional can hurt your career. And now, the correct answer:
Big Law lawyers don't have time for hobbies.
As far as hobbies go, do what floats your boat. People have a wide range of outside interests and hobbies.
