Getting Fired from a job - affect OCI Prospects?
Does this have a big impact? Like will I be OCI screwed if I got fired before.
I was fired from a job for an email issue - company basically made an example out of me as many of the workers do what I did daily. Also , something that no one really knew was against the rules.
When I left, I left on good terms with everyone at the company and cooperated with HR about trying to figure out the pervasiveness of the issue at the company (ie, what ppl with a similar job as me thought about company policies, etc).
But I still did break the rules. Will OCI companies ask "why did you leave?" How do I handle. Freaking out.
Thanks

Are you in law school now? If not, firms will likely not ask why you left former jobs. They very rarely ask for references. You should be fine.

Op here. No I'm not. I'm a 0L, but had an interview last week where we went through my resume and they asked why I left each job. Went fine, but realized that it's an auto turn off when you say you were fired and then thought that maybe it would affect me come OCI.
Very reassuring. Thanks for the info!

Just say you resigned. Wat is wrong with ppl? You don't always have to tell da truth an' shit, in fact it is much harder to get hired if you busy bullshitin' shooting yourself in da foot.
'Why did you leave this job?'
"Was not challenging enough. Not too sound to critical or demanding, but I like a job that gives me the opportunity to..."
If you are a public figure or something akin to a celebrity then disregard this advice but then again if you are you would have no problem getting work so you probably wouldn't need to do this.
If it is also a very high profile position (which being an associate is not) like white house appointed seats, don't lie but otherwise in this job market you cannot afford to tell interviewers you were fired previously.

Not to sound like a paranoid freak or anything, but lying about being fired from a job could be revealed in C&F investigation...UnTouChablE wrote:Just say you resigned. Wat is wrong with ppl? IMO, getting busted for lying is worse than admitting to being fired for a small infraction. Just sayin.

That's what I was thinking, that it could come back to haunt in C+F. Even though one screening interview years back probably doest mean anything, I dont want to take any chances on a 200k education and not be eligible for the bar.Leira7905 wrote:Not to sound like a paranoid freak or anything, but lying about being fired from a job could be revealed in C&F investigation...UnTouChablE wrote:Just say you resigned. In anyone else's experience, did they ever go down your resume asking why you left the companies?
Thanks again in advance.

And yes, every interview I have had, I have been asked that question about all my previous jobs.
My feelings is that OCI might be different tho, since they expect that you to be a student and have everything else that comes with being a student ie unstable work history. Good question tho.

At OCI no one will ask whether you were fired. So you won't need to lie. Just don't bring it up.
Now C&F will ask why you left your employer. You will need to divulge what happened there.

It was 3 years ago. Aside from that, the rest of the resume is fine. Not great work experience persay (two freelance gigs that I still do and an assistant gig), but nothing that would draw red flags, hopefully.Leira7905 wrote:How far down your resume is it? Last week? Thanks for the info. Definitely plan on including everything in C+F, cant imagine they would ding me for getting fired once.Voyager wrote:At OCI no one will ask whether you were fired. So you won't need to lie. Just don't bring it up.

Re: Getting Fired from a job - affect OCI Prospects?
this is not going to affect c&f lol. it's not like you got fired for embezzling money.
i don't recall being asked why i left jobs at oci. it might depend on the timing of the jobs. it was pretty obvious that my "work experience" was summer jobs, and one part time job i had throughout college. no one asked why i left because there was a 99% chance the answer would be "because law school was starting" or "the summer ended"

Re: Getting Fired from a job - affect OCI Prospects?
I didn't get asked about why I left previous jobs, but I have a lot on my resume and two separate partners thought that I had gaps in the timeline. They both brought it up until I clarified that I was actually doing multiple things at once. So if you're not doing anything from now until September, you might be asked what you did for nine months.
