I would add that NYC is particularly exorbitant in its taxes in all their varied forms...However what amounts to over 13 grand a month is not a pittance by any stretch unless you speak from the perspective of a Kennedy

These two things don't cancel each other out, but they do pull in opposite directions.

As the educated, we like to pretend that we're better than the people of the 16 African countries (plus Afghanistan) who get by on less than $1000 a year, but we're not. It's luck of the draw. It's pure luck that we were born in a nation that provided us with such an amazing education and the resources to make it to where we were - if the dice were rolled differently we'd be the ones with the distended stomachs having to weave baskets to make ends meet on a dollar or two a day. Don't pretend like anything over $20,000 a year isn't more than enough to live on, it's not - that's what my family made when I was growing up in California and we lived very comfortably.

Actually, living expenses in Moscow are very very high. The rest of Russia is cheap.

All that said... 160k is a ton of money. Even with debt. My friends and I live very very comforably in NYC.

The problem is that many of these kids startig earning and then immediately start spending. As a result, it becomes difficult to consider opportunities offering less than that.

As for success stories: sure, most of my class is earning that or more. I also know a couple of kids that are still unemployed!
