Lower T2 -> T10

Still waiting on one grade (will update), but wanted to keep the thread alive.

Old School:
3.9 (top 2%)

New School:
3.8 (roughly top 10%)

Not a significant drop and we'll see how this last grade comes out, but I'm not complaining. Still, clearly was a slight drop for me - we'll see how round 2 goes.

Isn't one significant issue with transfer grades going to be schools that have a higher curve for upper level courses?

Say a school has a 1st year curve of 2.8. Then Transfer Student X comes to the school for second year when there is a 3.4 upper level curve. Transfer Student X can get median grades and still probably ends up somewhere around the top 25% or better of the class. Right?

most top schools use a single curve for all classes above X number of students. So unless the transfer takes a bunch of small seminars and clinics, it won't make much of a difference other than competing against people who perhaps have since taken their foot off the gas a little once the dust from oci settled.

Top schools yes, but doesn't that problem still exist for those transferring into a t50-25 school? I'm just genuinely curious.

maybe. i transferred from a tier one but didn't stick around long enough to see if they inflated the median higher for 2L classes. 1L median was a 3.3; can't imagine it getting any higher, although anything's possible. Two-tiered curves (one for 1Ls; second for 2/3Ls) seem unruly and needlessly ttt.

Does anyone know approximately where a student might rank with a 3.85 GPA and a 3.3 curve?

You would need another data point to calculate it. At Cornell, which curves to a 3.35, that would likely be top 1-2%, but it could be different for other schools.

Can you provide the distribution for the 1Ls after the first year? Why can't you compared yourself to that?

What kind of "data point?"

Does this breakdown help in figuring out an approx. rank? GPA = 3.85. Oh, btw, it looks like the curve is actually a 3.4 and not a 3.3, but I am no stats guy, that's for sure. Thanks. :)

A At least 5% and less than or equal to 15% 4.0
A- At least 20% minus (% given A) and less than or equal to 40% minus (% given A) 3.7
B+ At least 50% minus (% given A or A-) and less than or equal to 75% minus (% given A or A-) 3.4
B % Discretionary. 3.0
B- % Discretionary. 2.7
C % Discretionary. C or D grades are capped at a total of 5% for first-year courses. 2.0
D % Discretionary. This grade indicates that the level of performance is below that which on average is required for the award of the degree. C or D grades are capped at a total of 5% for first-year courses. 1.0
E % Discretionary. No credit. This grade indicates unsatisfactory performance and no credit is given for the course. 0.0

My grades suffered a hit this semester from transferring. Went from a 90s school to a 40s. The adjustment was hard for me...I'm currently in the B+ range, when I was in the A- range. Someone please tell me this will get better this coming semester bc I've adjusted?!

Killed it. Final grades are in.

Old School: TTTTT (unranked school)
Old School GPA: 3.10 (on a 2.67 curve) -> Top 23%

New School: Top 30
New School GPA: 3.69 (on a 3.2 curve) -> Top 10%

Good to be off to a running start. Will aim to continue by all means.

Christ. I've never seen so many bumps, especially for something unrelated to the actual thread it was posted in.

I would advice starting your own thread in the regular law students forum, you'll get some more responses - there are a couple dudes who answer everyone's question re: curves

Cooley to a t30 in your home state? If so, we might know each other...

Low T2 ---> T20

Old School : 3.7 ~ Top 5%

New School: 3.53 (doesn't rank but has a B + curve)

All in all, I studied significantly less, took almost no practice exams and was pretty much numb to the whole finals experience. I can honestly say my drop in GPA was definitely from the lack of effort on my part.

Old school: T40 top 2%
New school: T6 top 15%

A little bit of a grade drop, but I totally slacked off. It was great.
