How do stipend apps get rejected?

At my law school it's either all or nothing; either your job qualifies for the full stipend; or it doesn't but then you usually know better than to apply for it.

Are these other stipend programs a bit different or something?

Here, if you get a job that qualifies, you have to apply, and then they pick using Lord knows what kind of criteria. Not GPA I know that. So far I know a person who had Federal PD and another with USAO who got rejected. Profs. kept telling me that these stipends were fairly easy to get, and maybe they were, or maybe my Profs. were full of shit. This year there was a very high number of apps. though I know that. 2Ls were competing for them, too, and they get priority. Oh well, looks like I'll fucking pay for credit and try to wait tables. Let's be honest though, my school is not known for the support they give to govt. or PI people (as evidenced by the atrocious LRAP).

Wow, that sucks. My school is great for PI and government jobs in addition to being T14. We have a separate career services office dedicated to public interest, any anyone who gets a volunteer summer job that is the equivalent of 6 weeks full-time or more (i.e. it can be less than full-time but for more than six weeks, etc.), and is either PI, non-profit, or government gets a guaranteed stipend of over $3000. The LRAP is pretty good too. At least for 1L summer, even people set on biglaw often wind up with something non-profit and get this stipend. They're pretty generous. Of course in return we have to volunteer at the fund-raising auction the following fall, but that's simple considering the money they give us.

I was sick or something and didn't go to ours. One kid got a pair of super bowl tickets for like $1000. In hindsight, I'd have gone and tried to snag those, but that's only knowing what I know now about how the Super Bowl went.

Yeah we get automatic stipends of 4k if we work PI or gov in 1L.

Wow, I thought the $3000 NYLS gives us for PI, non profit, and government was short of what it should be. It's not automatic...you still apply...but you can't be rejected unless there is an error in your app - which you can reapply.
However, funding can run out so if you don't lock your job up quickly, you might not get paid.

I had the same feeling when I was in the running for this one firm...

On the plus side, it was the best rejection I had ever gotten...They said they were full, but that where I was interning for the second half of summer has always produced "stellar" candidates. The next paragraph gave the personal contact info of the hiring partner inviting me to call and have lunch over the summer to discuss opportunities with the firm for next summer.

Seriously...best rejection letter EVER.

Wow, that is nice. Mine was sort of nice. It said I'd be a great candidate for any firm. But, I don't get the sense that it was super genuine. Anyway, I guess I'm going to formally accept my offer with the gov now. Although, my teacher sent me an e-mail yesterday with a firm he thinks I should apply to. Even if I do though, it's doubtful I would send in my application, have an interview and get accepted by tomorrow, so, I have to accept what I have. I might just be that bad unprofessional person who ditches it if I get a paying job. Which... I won't. Because my luck this cycle sucks. Or I suck. One or the other.

I just accepted the gov. job, and literally 5 minutes later get a phone call from a paying firm. Why did I accept a day before I had to?

You know, there are people here (including me) who say you can always rescind your acceptance, assuming the paying firm was offering you a job and not just an interview.

Either way, CONGRATS! YOU'RE EMPLOYED!

I have this guilt thing about accepting and then rejecting. But, I guess the firm only offered me an interview, so I suppose I'm worrying about nothing. Your right though, either way, I have something to put on my resume for OCI. Thanks! Edit: I guess i'll let yall know how the interview went.

just asked to come in to interview at my first choice..during the second week of May lol. Looks like my summer plans may not be finalized for almost another month. But because I'd prefer this to my current offer, I think I'll ride both and see where I end up. Neither are paid tho so it is still a big "YEAH!!... ohh wait."

+1 It's pretty much impossible to not qualify here; even if you RA with a prof while externing I think you qualify.

That's ridiculously amazing that you all can easily get stipend grants. My school only has 2 grants that are minimal compared to yours (I think one is no more than $2k? The other, I dunno). Otherwise, it's basically a "screw you, either get paid or take a personal loan." Which mean severely limiting opportunities for us poor folks.

My interview was awkward. This guy is the most straight laced guy ever. And the first thing he says is "So I wanted to let you know, we do work with the porn industry, does that bother you?" Then he seemed convinced that I was going to make law review (with a 3.5 - I'm nowhere close), and I didn't have the heart to tell him a 3.5 isn't as good as he thinks it is. And then some more awkward talk, he told me my resume was great as was my writing sample. So it was a nice ego boost, but the whole thing still seemed awkward.
