Transfer Summer Employment Results (Summer 2011)

Postby Anonymous User » Mon Dec 13, 2010 12:32 pm

How did everyone do OCI and post-OCI combined? There's another thread for t14 OCI results, but it will be helpful to prospective transfers, and us, see how all the transfers faired overall.

Old School: T40
New School: CCN
Result: Biglaw (V5)
Method: Mass mailing.

Curious - did they ding you during OCI for a screener? I can't imagine the whole V5 doesn't interview at your school...

Not to out where OP ended up getting his job (and congratulations are in order too), but it's pretty well known that Cravath was hunting for summer associates pretty late in the game.

I just assumed that, being a TLSer after all, if it was CSM he would have said it was a "V2." Anonymity isn't worth letting people think you work for a TTT operation like SullCrom...

That thread has no anon feature.

Original School: east coast, between 60-70
Original School GPA/Rank: ~13%
Transfer School Tier: T20
Journal: LR at old, nada at new
OCI Screeners: ~21 (V20-midsize firms)
Non-OCI Screeners: ~6
CBs:13 (a few non-OCI, mostly OCI)
CBs Accepted/Went: 10 (NY-2, DC-4, PHI-2, LA-2)
Offers: 2 nlj 250 (took one of these...big IP shop), 1 V60, and 1 non-nlj market-paying midsize...so all either biglaw/midlaw?
Impressions: I'm about as average as it gets. I got REALLY lucky.

Edit: Added more info -- To anyone contemplating a transfer, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. I cannot stress how ridiculously busy it is - with OCI/CBs/travelling, I put myself wayyy behind in work really early on and only got caught up right before exams. Was it worth it? For me, of course it was - but in general it's by no means a golden ticket (T20 is no T5/HYS either, but it was just enough). I know far too many transfers without summer gigs of any sort. I wouldn't recommended transferring UNLESS (all this assumes you did pretty well, e.g. top 10% at original school and you're looking to transfer up):

If original school was T3/4, then 1. less than full tuition guaranteed financial aid, and 2. you got into a T20 or better.
If original school was T2, then 1. less than full tuition guaranteed financial aid, 2. you got into T20 or better, and 3. you've got good reasons to transfer other than "I want a T20 degree" (e.g. region where you want to work, family, etc...)
If original school was middling/lower T1, then 1. half to no tuition guaranteed financial aid, 2. you got into a T20 or better, and 3. you've got really good reasons.
If original school was T20-30, then 1. tiny bit to no aid, 2. you got into a T10 or better, and 3. you really don't think you can land a jorb at original school (which, depending upon your school, might be a big factor...or not...lots of people in my transferee school, I've heard, did pretty well in the top 10%...but I make no guarantees).
I can't really speak for anything higher than these tiers...based on the impressions that I get from people at my original/transfer school, this seems to be how it might/should pan out.

My brain is fried from exams, so I hope my logic computes here. :?

Dude GOOD FOR YOU for kicking so much ass. Going from T4 to T10 is no joke. I really hope you'll consider writing a detailed description of your study methods in the content competition forum, because it could be of great benefit to 0Ls.

First school: T40-50
Rank: T10%
New School: T10
OCI screeners: 25
OCI CBs: 5
Offers: 1 V50, 1 V100

I agree with the above poster. Transferring is incredibly exhausting with moving, writing competition, getting thrown into OCI, orientation, picking classes at the last minute and doing this all with two weeks notice since most schools do not notify until at least mid July. Also, transferring is not a guarantee that you will get something out of OCI. Tons of really capable people fall through the cracks. That being said, if you have the guts to do it and you know that you will not be satisfied with the opportunities that come with a degree from your home school, transferring does have the potential to give you amazing prospect (federal clerkships, academia, big law, etc).

Original: T20, top 20% no LR
New school: T6
CBs: 6
Offers: 1 (NLJ 250)

I was not prepared for OCI. Did not realize how grueling interviews would be, nor that people actually cared about Vault rankings when it came to GPA cutoffs. For example, why is Cleary more competitive than Cahill/SRZ? For some reason, this does matter; pick your bids accordingly--don't waste time with V10 if you don't have gangster grades (20% at a T20 is not "gangster"). It still worked out for me, but I feel like I could have gotten more than 1 offer if I had been better prepared.

If you've got like 20 screeners over a few days and you're still trying to get settled-into you're new surroundings, you don't live with you head in the sand and realize that there is a very high probability of not landing a jorb because you're a lowly transfer schmeeb, and you don't want to live in a trashcan after graduation while paying what little pittance you can scrounge up from passers-by to Uncle Sam...

I'd say the average 2L transfer would probably feel like the process would be "grueling."

edit: I was not the anon quoted above. Also, I wasn't trying to be a dick. Transfer OCI was a bitch. Prospective 1L transferees (and for the love of god hopefully not "prospective 0Ls") need to know that.

Transfers in particular are on trial in every single screener interview. "Why did you transfer? Doesn't that display a certain lack of loyalty? Why should we pick you over the students who were here last year? I have no way of knowing how you would have stacked up against them." It was rough.

Ya in 75% of my interviews I had to spend the first 5 minutes explaining what/where my old school is/was (it was a t4 school). More than 1 interviewer asked me if it was accredited. Why this wasn't a total barrier to success in interviews, I did feel like I had an uphill battle selling that I was as worthy as my new school classmates. I even had 1 interviewer tell me that she loved my personality and that I would be a good fit but that I had a 0% chance of getting a CB because they reviewed candidates by committee. Such is life.

As a counterpoint I had the opposite experience. I was asked about it in every screener, but it was generally a softball question. Some interviewers congratulated me and others wanted to hear how the process works or how many students transfer in/out.

Ya some def acted like that, but I didn't take it as a positive all the time. I got the impression that some interviewers were just spinning my wheels to get through the 20 minutes as fast as possible. (I'm looking at you Bryan Cave and Cadwalader).
